Subject: 1995: The Year in Music

Written By: XYkid on 11/16/13 at 3:48 pm

This is probably one of my favourite years in music. It was very interesting. Grunge is slowly starting to fade away since Kurt's death (RIP), and mostly being replaced with Adult Alternative. I feel like a lot of the music around this time sort of had a hippie-esque, early 70s vibe to it.

This was also the year one of my favourite childhood movies came out, A Goofy Movie. I love the soundtrack in this film, and my favourite songs were the ones done by the pop star Powerline (an allusion to Michael Jackson), voiced by Tevin Campbell.

Alanis Morisette also made her big debut that year, and her album, Jagged Little Pill, became the one of the top selling acts from a solo female act.

And of course, what's 1995 without a little Hootie? I don't care how many of you hate them, I will always be a fan of theirs. Go ahead and fudge me, I don't care.

Why would anyone fudge you for liking a song? Ignore them if they do.
The song's not bad though "Only wanna be with you", one of the better ones from that time period.

Here's one I like, it's not bad.

Blues Traveler hit big that year with "Run-around":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z-yLH5wcEoQ

I remember it spent several months on the charts, and I tried to memorize it but had a hard time understanding most of the words.

Much later that year, they had a follow-up hit with "Hook", which has a long verse with speedily-sung words that are also kinda hard to understand.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WRhJt3PLdUE

Both songs make ample use of the harmonica.

A few things:

1.) I was 11 in 1995 and that summer you could not go ANYWHERE without hearing a song from Cracked Rear View Mirror.
2.) The same holds true for Blues Traveler's Four and DMB's Under The Table.

3.) That Weird Al Bad Hair Day was one of the first CDs I ever bought.
4.) I bought this CD ( the soundtrack to the film Bad Boys) and listened to this song over and over again.

It did; it was a big hit during the last few months of the year.

Lots of people probably heard the background vocals as "Who loves tacos", but it's actually "ooh la kah koh", which, according to Hawkins, doesn't actually mean anything; she apparently made it up herself while recording the album.

Released as a single in 1995, "You Are Not Alone" is the second single from Michael Jackson's album HIStory. The R&B ballad's composition has been attributed by R. Kelly in response to difficult times in his personal life. He then forwarded a bare demo tape to Jackson, who liked the song and decided to produce it with Kelly. Jackson's interest in the song was also linked to recent events in his personal life. The song was later covered by Kelly himself as a hidden track on his tenth solo studio album Love Letter.

"Baby, Now That I've Found You" is a song written by Tony Macaulay and John MacLeod. Originally released in 1967 by The Foundations. The song was a 1995 country hit for Alison Krauss from the album Now That I've Found You: A Collection. Her version appeared in the Australian comedy film, "The Castle". It peaked at number 49 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart.

"Go Rest High on That Mountain" is a song written and recorded by American country music artist Vince Gill. It was released in August 1995 as the sixth single from his album When Love Finds You. It is a eulogic ballad. Gill began writing the song following the death of country music superstar Keith Whitley, who died in 1989. Gill did not finish the song until a few years later following the death of his older brother Bob, in 1993, of a heart attack. Ricky Skaggs and Patty Loveless both sang background vocals on the record.

"You've Got a Friend in Me" is a song by Randy Newman. Used as the theme song for the 1995 Disney/Pixar animated film Toy Story, it has since become a major musical component for its sequels, Toy Story 2 (1999) and Toy Story 3 (2010) as well as a musical leitmotif throughout the whole Toy Story franchise. The song was nominated for both the Academy Award for Best Original Song and the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, but lost both to "Colors of the Wind" from Disney's Pocahontas. Like many other Disney theme songs, "You've Got a Friend in Me" has been covered numerous times. Cover versions featured in the three Toy Story films include a duet with Newman and Lyle Lovett in Toy Story; a diegetic instance by Tom Hanks, a version by Robert Goulet and an instrumental by Tom Scott in Toy Story 2, and a Spanish language version by the Gipsy Kings in Toy Story 3.

"Hakuna Matata" is a song from Disney's 32nd animated feature The Lion King. The music was written by Elton John with lyrics by Tim Rice. The song is based on Timon and Pumbaa's catchphrase in the movie, Hakuna matata, which is a Swahili phrase; it means 'no worries'. It is characterized by its simple 4/4 time, upbeat message and catchy lyrics.

One of my favorite songs from 1995. I use to have this cassette single and would listen to it everyday! I think I still have it in storage.

"Con te partirò"  is an Italian song written by Francesco Sartori (music) and Lucio Quarantotto (lyrics). It was first performed by Andrea Bocelli at the 1995 Sanremo Music Festival and recorded on his album of the same year, Bocelli. The single was first released as an A-side single with "Vivere" in 1995, topping the charts, first in France, where it became one of the best-selling singles of all-time, and then in Belgium, breaking the all-time record sales there. A second version of the song, sung partly in English, released as "Time to Say Goodbye" as a duet with  Sara Brightman.
