Subject: 1999: The Year in Music

1999, what a fun year to close out the millennium. Everyone was partying like there was no tomorrow, and the music of that year really showed it too.

The second Austin Powers movie was released that year; its soundtrack featured Lenny Kravitz's cover of the Guess Who's "American Woman", as well as a song from Madonna entitled "Beautiful Stranger". For the latter, I couldn't find a Youtube clip that had just the song, so I had to settle for the music video as a whole; here's a link where the song begins: right here

And here's "American Woman":

Matchbox Twenty's debut album, Yourself Or Someone Like You, which was released in early 1997, had four tracks that became hits on the charts. The last one, "Back 2 Good", became a hit in early 1999.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIkjyQt3xv8

This song, at roughly 5 1/2 minutes, often got cut down on radio airplay. Some stations cut out the second-to-last verse (3:29-4:18), while others would cut out the last verse (4:19-5:16). Very rarely would I hear the whole thing on the radio.

Seriously, this is the video that took me from N'Sync and got me on the BSB train, because I loved Howie Dorough--the cute one with the slicked back hair, and gave up Lance Bass. Go ahead laugh...I know now...I know now.... :) To put it in perspective. BSB had it for me in group form, what MJ had for me as a solo artist. It was that serious when I was 13.

There was also Santana's comeback album, Supernatural, which contained the singles "Smooth" (featuring vocals by Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas; it was a huge hit during the latter half of the year) and "Maria Maria" (featuring The Product G&B), as well as "Put Your Lights On" (featuring Everlast, who earlier in 1999 had a hit single with "What It's Like").

1999 is one of those years that, music wise, brings me a rush of both nostalgia and embarrassment. By and large, the popular music of that time was pretty horrible, but 12-year-old me certainly loved it, and seeing all of these videos posted here brings back many great memories.

I was big into rock at that time, so two somewhat forgotten songs I listened to quite a bit in '99 were:

1999 and 2000 were very similar in terms of pop culture, so you can't really blame people for getting them mixed up so easily.

Songs are definitely recent for more than one year. That's totally normal. There were songs in a year that have been released on an album and the song has been rereleased as a single a year later... That was also the case in 99/00.

Yeah, but some of these 1999 songs didn't hit the top 40 until 2000. Therefore, they aren't 1999 songs, but 2000 songs. If a song hits the top 40 in 1999, then it is both a 1999 and 2000 song.

I was 23 when this song came out.  I had been following this band from the very beginning.  They were immensely popular in Canada just like the New Kids On The Block.
I don't know what drew me to them? Probably because they were young when they started.  I still do love them.  Alas all of them grew up, got married, and four of them have kids.  Oh well.  I can still dream about them right?

"You Needed Me" is a song written by Randy Goodrum, who describes it as being about "unconditional undeserved love." It was a number one hit single in the United States in 1978 for Canadian singer Anne Murray. In 1999, Irish pop band Boyzone recorded a hit cover of the song that hit number one in the UK Singles Chart.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68MKLkNSMN4

Also, the live original version of Aaron Lewis and Fred Durst's "Outside" (the one with "I'm feelin' those lighters"). I can't recall if this came on the radio in 1999 or 2000, but I think it was 1999. Perhaps Nally knows. It feels like both years to me, so I probably heard it a lot during both those years.

This is a good song from 1999; "Push It" by Static-X. It was released just ten days after I was born. :)

Man, this thread never ceases to give me some awesome nostalgia. It's funny because some of the worst songs from 1999 are also some that make me feel the most nostalgic. All I can say is that I was a middle schooler at the time, and 6th graders are not exactly known for their quality taste of music.

Here's another song that is cheesy as hell, but makes me feel serious nostalgia for 1999.

Both of those were from the band's album Make Yourself, which of course was released in October of that year. One other track from it, "Drive", didn't become a hit until two years later.

I think I might've posted that one earlier in this thread, but it's a nice little song. Kinda short, at 2 minutes and some seconds, but it has a nice message in it, and often times I like to listen to it when I feel down. :)

I almost always think of that little song when I split up with somebody so it makes it a sad song. But other than that it has a great organ part.

Other songs I remember from 99 are by Sugar Ray, especially Someday. The singer had a great voice with a melancholy quality to it.

Then was Give It To You by Jordan Knight. IMO One of the dumbest songs I ever heard but certainly memorable.

Spring of 99 was when I bought my first house.

Imo, 1999 is one of the best and strongest years in pop music history. Smooth, Livin' La Vida Loca, Better Days, Mambo No. 5, Praise You, All Star, Scar Tissue, and No Scrubs are my favorites from that year.

Enrique Iglesias - Bailamos

Yep, latin pop was huge during that era. (And I remember this song very well; it was a favourite of mine.)

Enrique was of course a second-generation singer (the son of Julio Iglesias, who scored a number of hits in both English and Spanish during his career). Nothing like following in your dad's footsteps. O0

Ricky Martin: Livin La Vida Loca

I was stunned when I found out that Ricky Martin is gay.  But I was happy for him when he did come out because it meant that he didn't have to hide how he is anymore.
This could have ruined him but it hasn't ruined him at all and now Ricky is living a very quiet life with his husband and his children.  I really wish that gay celebrities wouldn't feel so ashamed of who they are.
It must have been quite difficult for Ricky to keep his sexuality to himself knowing that he had an image to protect.

When it came down to top 40 hits and the like, I've seen 1999 as the best year when it came down to pop music, just so many bangers came out that year, especially that summer.
