Subject: Video Games: 1993

Written By: Visor765 on 05/29/14 at 5:01 pm

1993 was a quiet year for video games. It didn't feature too many noteworthy games.

Nintendo releases Kirby's Adventure, the second Kirby game and the only one for the NES:

They also release The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening for the GameBoy:

Sega releases Sonic CD on the Sega CD, the first game to feature Amy Rose and Metal Sonic:

LucasArts releases Sam & Max Hit the Road, one of the funniest point-and-click games of all time:

id Software releases DOOM, an iconic first-person shooter:
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/57/Doom_cover_art.jpg

Sega releases Virtua Fighter to arcades, the first 3D fighting game EVER, and would forever change the way people played fighting games. You see, before, fighting games were based on 2D sprites, like Street Fighter, and gameplay was based on a 2D plane. Virtua Fighter, although quickly becoming outdated, changed all of that: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/bb/VirtuaFighter_arcadeflyer.png

This is what it looked like lol:

Wow, how crappy is that?

I remember Kirby's Adventure for Gameboy and Gameboy was still hot on the market.

I remember Sonic being huge with two cartoon series. One during the week before school and very cartoony and one on Saturday Mornings which was more serious.

I got it for my 7th birthday exactly 21 years ago. How time flies. I clearly remember it.

Why shouldn't it work? Unless you haven't stored it very badly, it could still work like 20+ years ago.

I enjoyed Wario Land, it was a bit difficult at first but then I got the hang of it later on.

Inland, it's the game probably from years of wear and tear.

Super Mario 1 on GameBoy was harder than Super Mario Land 2. What do you think? There was no option to save the game and you had to play it from the beginning till the end without switching the device of.

Yes it was I thought it got easier with Wario Golden Coins, I like the way when Mario tries kill a bad guy is by jumping on them till they perish.

Wow, that list gave me quite the nostalgia rush!

1993 was a huge year for me personally on the gaming front. It was the year I put aside the playground pettiness of the "Console Wars" and decided to get a Sega Genesis to join the Super Nintendo already on my bedroom shelf. Subsequently,  I would say that I owned, or at least rented, nearly every title pictured up there. Even that dopey Robotnik Mean Bean Machine game. It's quite amazing how simply looking at a promotional poster for "NBA Jam" can immediately bring back distant memories of countless hours spent playing the SNES version with friends from my old neighborhood not seen in years.

At any rate, my only regret regarding the games of '93 was that I never owned "Super Mario All-Stars", just rented it a couple dozen times. Being able to play "Super Mario Bros. 3" in 16-bit was a true revolution back then.

I have also played all of these games I listed except for Star Fox, Madden NFL '94, TMNT III, and Duke Nukem 2. Super Mario All Stars is a good game as you got to play the originals in SNES version. NBA Jam was really fun. I kept playing it everyday, but unfortunately, I kept losing for some reason. Mean Bean Machine was fun as well as I had it with Sonic Mega Collection and it was difficult as you got higher. Pac Attack is just like Tetris except it has ghosts as blocks instead of just all of them, but it is still great to play. Yoshi's Safari would have been fun to play if I had the super scope at the time as I would have shot all of the incoming enemies and the boss and avoiding the obstacles. Shinobi 3 was good too, but I got stuck on one level and could not pass it. Sonic Spinball is an unique game as instead of an actual pinball, Sonic is the ball. I have made it to the last level a few times, but somehow I cant get up to the boss at all. Good times with those games.

Always a huge line to play virtua fighter at the arcade. That stumbling old drunk guy was tough to beat!
