Subject: What was the biggest thing that happened in the 90s?

Written By: winteriscoming on 12/09/14 at 8:37 pm

I'd have the say the collapse of the USSR and Yugoslavia was the single most massive event in that decade, tied with the Internet being opened to commercial traffic.

Yes, I agree that this was the most important event in the 90s for the world. For Germans, it was probably the reunification of Germany on October 3rd, 1990.

The internet was not that important for the 90s IMO. This was also a gradual development since the late 80s.

True, it mostly spread around the world in the 00s, and even in the US few people were online prior to 1995.

Other decades:
As for the other decades since 1900 (including the '90s), I'd say:

1900s: The Model T Ford is introduced (Wright Brothers' first flight is a close second)
1910s: Titanic sinks
1920s: Stock Market crashes
1930s: Adolf Hitler becomes dictator
1940s: D-Day (Pearl Harbor is less well known outside of America and Japan)
1950s: Sputnik is launched into space
1960s: First lunar landing
1970s: The Energy Crisises
1980s: Fall of the Berlin Wall
1990s: Soviet Union collapses (with the Internet a close second)
2000s: 9/11 Attacks
2010s (so far): Ebola outbreak (I feel the decade's biggest event will occur in the second half of the decade)

I think everything since the 60s also fits to Germany.

For the 1900s-50s however I would say:

1900s: The Model T Ford is introduced (this one, too)
1910s: WW1
1920s: Hyperinflation around 1923
1930s: Adolf Hitler becomes dictator (this one, too, of course)
1940s: WWII
1950s: Reconstruction

I don't know, I don't agree with some of these, for the 1900s I would say the assassination of President McKinley and Theodore Roosvelt becoming president, as far as the US gones, he defines that decade(The Progressive Era).

For the 1910s it is obviously the outbreak of WW1, but 1919 was a year that had many things going on as well(The Red Scare, race riots, ect.)

For the 1930s I'd go with FDR becoming president in 1933 and enacting The New Deal.

I'd agree with D Day for the 1940s.

The 1960s had a lot of things going on the consider, you could consider the whole year 1968 as an "event" :D

For the 1970s I'd go with Watergate

I agree with the 1980s and 1990s but I consider the 2008 financial crisis to be MUCH more impactful than 9/11

For the 2010s(so far) definitely The Arab Spring and the continuation of The Great "Recession"(I consider it a mild Depression).

In the trailer for the Wedding Singer, they refer to 1985 as a time before Internet and cell phones, which is sort of interesting because technically both existed in 1985 and even by 1998 it was only a large minority of people who used them. But it's still sort of true since they were familiar things by 1998 but almost unknown in 1985.

I definitely think you could make an argument for the Simpsons being the biggest innovation on television in the 90s but it's not comparable to the collapse of command economies around the world or the rise of capitalist neoliberalism and digital tech that happened in that decade (and the 2000s, and this one)

Back in 1997 a shipping container carrying 4.8 million Lego pieces fell into the sea, roughly 20 miles from Land’s End. Many years later the tide is still washing  loads of Lego onto beaches around Cornwall. There have also been discoveries of Lego in Devon, Ireland and Wales.

Maybe it's just because I have no memory of the world before the Soviet collapse (I was only 14 months old when it happened) but the advent of the World Wide Web seems like a bigger deal to me. It has completely revolutionized the way we live even if it didn't become a household necessity until the '00s.

I call it a draw. He wrote the basic concept for it down on paper in 1989, but the actual coding and first tests were done in late 1990. And it wasn't really ready-for-use until Mosaic came out in 1993.

I would say from a technological standpoint, Windows 95 was pretty big.  People today underrate its importance but it was a monumental leap forward for the usability of PCs.  I would say it ushered in the age of modern computing.  Before Windows 95, computers weren't near as easy for the average Joe to use.  Plug and play (plug and what?) is taken for granted in 2015 but prior to Windows 95 it didn't exist.  Without it, many of the things people do with computers wouldn't be near as popular.  Internet connectivity also wasn't near as common.  The modern Internet as we know it today began in the Windows 95 era.

The first news event that I vividly recall seeing coverage of is the 1996 Olympic Park Bombing, but I think that's just because it was such a huge deal around here locally with the Olympics being in our home state.

Other than that, I would also say that 1997 was the first year that I was really old enough to start paying attention to major news stories. I can still clearly remember seeing coverage of all of the big news events of that year (like the tragic deaths of Princess Diana and Gianni Versace, the cloning of Dolly the Sheep, the Hale-Bopp comet/Heaven's Gate controversy, etc.).
