Subject: The 1996 Thread

Written By: 90s Guy on 04/16/15 at 12:12 pm

What do you remember of 1996?

What do you remember as being big in movies?

Fashion trends?

Pop culture in general?

The election of 1996?

Music?

TV?

What separates 1996 for you from 1995 and 1997, and perhaps the rest of the '90s? What things are unique to 1996?

This is, in my opinion, the first year of the "iconic" '90s.

Biggest movies of that year are "Mission Impossible", "Scream", "Independence Day", "Jerry Maguire", "Fargo", "Romeo + Juliet", "The Nutty Professor", "Matilda", "Space Jam", and "Swingers".

Clothing-wise, there was the 1960's Mod revival styles and 1970's Disco revival styles. Women's fashion leaned more toward the '60s, whereas men's fashion leaned more toward the '70s. Clothes became more colorful in this year. Grunge was on it's last legs. Denim was hot. Plaid was still very big that year, and chunky shoes were all the rage. A lot of women had the flip hairstyle. Men had a bunch of hairstyles, mostly the caesar haircut or the curtained haircut.

Television, Party of Five was cool; 7th Heaven premiered their first season on The WB, Buffy the Vampire Slayer started filming their first season, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. was at it's peak (although it's popularity remained rather consistent); Sienfeld was on it's second last season. There was a really good kid's show on Nickelodeon called "The Secret Life of Alex Mack" which entered it's third season that year.

Musically, there was a lot of dance music, Gangsta rap, East coast/West coast hip-hop, ballads, alternative rock music, and various forms of R&B. It was the most successful calendar year of the 1990s on the Billboard Hot 100 and Hot 100 Airplay charts. A lot of popular late '90s artists debuted this year. The '70s became cool again in the music scene, especially in R&B and Hip-Hop. It started with the singer Maxwell and his hit song "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)". This song also popularized neo-soul (a genre that would prove very popular in the late '90s). No Doubt broke into the mainstream this year, and popularized ska rock along with them, which would pave the way for bands such as Smash Mouth and Sugar Ray. Quite possibly the most interesting year of the decade for music.

Overall, with all of this, I could say that 1996 began the late '90s. Calendar-wise it's a middle year, but it's so similar to the late '90s and even the very early 2000's. To me, 1996 was the year that it all changed. It's so much more like 1999 than it is like 1993. This is my favorite year of the '90s in every element of American popular culture and I consider it the most important year of the 1990s.

Personally, one of the best years of the 90s.

The internet definitely became a big deal, even though not everyone had it.

Together with 1995, 1996 was the peak of my childhood. 1996/97 was my last elementary school year, and everything was happy.
I have often read the term "online", but I didn't really know what it was in 1996.

So you think the late 90s represent the 90s the best?! Ok, to each his own. I still think that the mid 90s was the heart of the decade. People a decade older than me that I have talked to obviously say the same thing!! BTW, I just would not lump in 96 with the late 90s years ;) that's just my two cents brother!

That's true. Probably all threads like this have an imaginary questionmark somewhere, if they were started by somebody very young (and only barely remembered that year). To be honest, I already wanted 1986 to be old as early as 1999, but that was a bit laughable back then ;)

In 1996 I was 5 years old and what I remember from this year in regards to pop culture are as follows

Music: Fugees Ready or Not and Killing me softly, Toni Braxton- Un Break my heart, Ginuwine- Pony, Az Yet- Last Night, Babyface- Everytime I close my eyes.

Movies: James and the giant peach(I remember going to the cinemas to see this with my dad), I remember seeing one ad spot on tv for All dogs go to heaven 2, HomeWard Bound 2 Lost in San Francisco(I was remember I was suppose to see this film with my mom one evening, but something came up so I couldn't see I again and I ended up getting that movie on VHS later that year) and Space Jam which came out later that year as I was entering Kindergarten.

Worldwide events: 1996 Atlanta Olympics I was a small child when this was going on so I wouldn't have paid nearly as much attention to I as my parents, but I do remember my parents tuning I to watch it.

Video games: I remember in my apartment at the time we often played Sega genesis and I got a Super Nintendo later on that year for Christmas.

Cartoons and tv shows: I was a big into Cartoon Network and PBS and watched shows like Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Garfield and I remember seeing the premier of Dexter's Lab that year. For PBS I watched Wishbone, Where on earth is Carmen San Diego?, Bill Nye the Science guy, old Shining Time Station episodes. I also watched cartoons on Disney channel at the time like Timon and Pumba.

Conan I think is now a promoter for Lucha Underground, a Spanish wrestling organization in Mexico

Scott Steiner (Big Poppa Pump) is now a roided up freak after all those steroids in the past he used to take, just recently he wanted to kill Hulk Hogan just because he hates his guts.

Sorry, I have to disagree with you on that one. Things weren't much different from how they are now (IMHO, anyway). The 90s decade was all about getting the earliest start of the Century we're in (as it should have been). Clinton will go down in the books as the first President of the 21st Century. I'm not gloating, 1990, '91 and '92 really were the last years of the 20th Century (especially 1990).

Everything changed in '93 when Aol added USENET access to its selections. Think of it like this, the USENET users of the 80s were connecting with AOL members. So, many of them were exposed to the online service provider, if they weren't before.

90s Internet and especially the Internet from the first half, had nothing in common with our 2010s society which is always connected. It was still a different world. Internet was expensive, slow and useless for most people. It had more in common with 80s internet, which was based on commands IMO. The earliest year that was like a preview on our modern society, was when Internet really became household in the late 90s.

1996 Internet was an extremely primitive, basic version of our current Internet.  It was mostly dial-up and there was no social media, but the way the web operated wouldn't be completely foreign to somebody in the 2010s.  That was the year that Microsoft released IE 3.0. Three years earlier, in 1993, yes it was a very different world and was useless for most people as you say.

Also an international hit in 1995, 1996, and 1997, and continues to have a cult following. One of the most iconic examples of 1990s dance music, it was ranked the "#1 Greatest One-Hit Wonder of all Time" by VH1 in 2002.

This was arguably one of the biggest moments of the year!! Changed the business forever, and started the second wrestling boom!!

Yeah, as a kid just getting into it wrestling that time, the Hogan heel turn was like the squared circle equivalent of the JFK assassination when it happened. That one event single handedly pulled wrestling from it's mid '90s doldrums, and opened the door for two full years of WCW domination in the Monday Night Wars before WWF could regain it's position as the top promotion.

As far as 1996 on the whole, it was a pretty awesome year for me personally, particularly that summer. I actually live in Georgia, so with the Olympics being in Atlanta, the Olympic torch relay passed just 20 miles from where I lived back then and my parents took us to go see it. 1996 was a great year for summer blockbusters, and the pivotal moment of that summer for me came when I got to go see the endlessly hyped Independence Day on opening weekend as a birthday present. I saw Twister a few weeks later with my parents as well. In '96, kids raced home from school to watch the Fox Kids Club and the Disney Afternoon, the Power Ranger fad began to peter out, Pokemon debuted on the Game Boy (in Japan), kids began to put away their Pogs and buy Goosebumps books in droves, Super Mario 64 proved that 3D gaming could really work, and Space Jam was a thing that actually happened. It was also the year that I first heard of this little thing called the World Wide Web, though we sadly wouldn't have internet access at home for four more years.

You really can't overstate just how massive the Macarena was that year though. It reached such a saturation point within the culture that even our tiny little rural school district was incorporating it into our class plays, and then, suddenly, Al Gore did the dance at the Democratic National Convention and it disappeared into the ether, never to be heard from again.
