Subject: Double denim - an 80s or 90s trend?

Written By: 90s Guy on 04/29/15 at 2:32 am

When would you place double denim on men - as an '80s fashion trend or a '90s trend?

I didn't really notice it much as men's fashion trend in the 80s.  I would place it more of in the 70s even.

I remember it in the 2000's even. I don't think it's particular to one decade. It's also called the Texas Tuxedo by the way.  ;D

My dad had a denim 3 piece suit he wore back in the 70's.

I've also heard it referred to as a Canadian Tuxedo.

I see Double Denim as a hippie era trend that has become a standard for many, but Double Denim has been around since at least the '50s and even earlier in its native California thanks to Levi Strauss. I sort of associate it as one of the many changes associated with the hippie era. In the '80s itself, they were still around, but started to be view as a classic compared to new trends such as acid washed jeans.

No no.
Double Denim = jeans and denim jacket. Or to be more specific, denim pants and denim jacket. It's not just blue on blue, it's specifically a jean jacket, whatever shirt, and jean pants.
Like Reagan here.

Denim-on-denim has been cool in every decade since the 1950's. It just changes with the times.

Denim was worn by The Marlboro Man, the figure used in tobacco advertising campaigns for Marlboro cigarettes. In the United States, where the campaign originated, it was used from 1954 to 1999.
