I wasn't really big into Pokemon growing up, but this would be my favorite game of the entire series.

I believe that game came out 2000. Pokémon Red/Blue is the only Pokémon game that came out West in 1998.

But still, the second game was far superior :P

This game should not be overlooked either!

By coincidence, it came out in Japan the exact same day as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - November 21, 1998 - thus making that date the greatest single day in gaming history!

Looks like a fun arcade game you'd see at a Chuck E. Cheese or Dave & Busters. Damn you must have loved that game, since you seem to talk about it a lot! ;D

I'm better at the Guitar Hero games for some reason.

Here are some classics from back in the day!!! This year was legendary, it was probably the best year of the 5th generation with 2000 at a close second.

Well, yes and no.  Technically, it was a completely different version of Pokémon Stadium that came out in Japan in 1998, featuring only 42 playable Pokémon instead of 151 and apparently being a lot harder than later games.  The game that later came to be known as the first Pokémon Stadium in the United States was released in Japan in April 1999.

Here's the artwork for the 1998 Japanese game:

Here's a poster for the 1999 sequel, which became the original Pokémon Stadium in North America:

Finally, Pokémon Stadium 2, which was simply known as Pocket Monsters Stadium Gold & Silver in Japan instead of Pocket Monsters Stadium 3 to avoid confusion:

I remember this game being very popular in the late 2000s. That along with Mario Kart are my favourite 2000s arcade games. I'm guessing you were a pro at this?

Yep, exactly! Pokémon Stadium could not have come out in 1998 anyway, because it's in that game where if you have a copy of Pokémon Yellow, you can use the transfer pak to play Pokémon Yellow and teach your Pikachu how to surf! Pokémon Yellow released 1999. Also, the final boss in Pokémon Stadium (Mewtwo) is very reminiscent of Pokémon The First Movie, which also came out 1999. You can't have Pokémon Stadium without these two things.

The Game Boy, a clunky monochrome system that could only display puke-green 8-bit graphics and compose beepy 8-bit tunes, was so popular in 1998. Why was it so good? I dunno, maybe gamers back in 1998 had imagination. Look at the commercials for Game Boy games in 1998, they were so TOTALLY RAD and flashy and featured AWESOME 3D GRAPHICS...when in reality it was just "beep boop beep boop".  ;D

Well they had to be rad and flashy. Imagine if for the commercials instead of showing you a bunch of flashy imagery they instead would show the monochrome green screen gameplay. I can imagines people not being as excited. The Gameboy Color in 1998 was nice. Added the color and even gave a layer of color to non-gameboy color games.

Can someone sum up what makes Banjo Kazooie so great? I experienced its hype in its heyday, but once I eventually played, I was disappointed.

It's hillarious and the platforming action is next to none! How did you not love the characters?

Yes this was the peak year of the 5th generation just like 2004 was to 6th, and arguably 1994 was to 4th.
