Subject: Favorite 90s video game music?

Written By: Zelek2 on 02/25/16 at 1:56 pm

This is a bit of an odd choice, but I would have to say the soundtrack from the Zelda CD-i games.

Even though the games are obviously not that good, the music is actually really good. Gives me a bit of a nostalgic feeling, like I'm sitting in the elementary school computer lab again:

The Zelda CD-i games are the GOAT's games. No game since has topped those masterpieces.

The Tony Hawk Pro-Skater games (except 5. F*ck you, Pro Skater 5) have the best video game music of all time.

Great songs! I really liked the Zelda one, although I never got to play that game. Ocarina of Time is no slouch in that department either!

The Pokémon Red/Blue/Yellow songs always bring back strong nostalgic memories for me.

It's too bad the battery would drain really fast if you had the sound on.

I forgot to add this one. Imo, this song is magical:

They're good songs on their own, however they really don't fit The Legend of Zelda at all.  Their futuristic techno style clashes with the medieval fantasy setting of the game itself.

Anyway, some of my favorite 90s video game soundtracks would include Ocarina of Time, as well as anything by Grant Kirkhope.  His signature style, displayed perfectly in Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong 64, is absolutely legendary.  They match the cartoony aesthetics of both games, yet are still heavily layered and create of a grand sense of atmosphere.

Zelek reminded me of this rad song a few weeks ago (I haven't played this game in years!)

Man, is this song sick or what!? It's totally early 00's in every way!

I see a lack of Donkey Kong Country and Sonic CD being mentioned. How disappointing.

Although it's weird to admit that I don't care for a lot of 1990's game soundtracks aside from Sonic and Rareware games. Although I do like a few other games like Super Mario RPG, Super Mario 64, Earthbound, and Chrono Trigger.

I'm too lazy to list URL's. I'll just list the whole albums and song titles I remember.

Shadow Dancer - 2-1/Battle on the railway.

Sonic 1 - Labyrinth Zone

Sonic 2 - Chemical Plant Zone

Super Mario 64 - Dire Dire Docks.

Flying Dragon

Sonic Adventure

The '90s was a decade filled with awesome video game music, but, to me, the original Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy has by far the best soundtrack of the era. I'll just let these speak for themselves:

The thing I like about Sonic 3 is that they got a team of actual, professional studio musicians to do the soundtrack (mostly ones from the Motown era). This certainly elevates it above your typical "children's game".

Even though Action 52 is one of the worst games ever made, it seems to be one of those games where the developers put all their effort into the soundtrack.

This is surprisingly epic:

This random music would get stuck in your head sometimes when you were at the store with your parents or walking in a school hallway trying to get to your next destination. But it sounds like some good dance music too.

this could seriously be used as Christmas music for your family to listen to in a gathering. It reminds you of going out on your own on a bright sunny day in the snow, and going skiing on your own or playing with snow.

This is all I got for now, I'll have more later.

Castlevania Symphony of the Night's Soundtrack is Golden!

Just brings me back to when I would watch my older cousins play this when I was like 4/5 years old :D 8)

And of course this soundtrack 18-19 years later holds up really well!

Another Action 52 song (bad game, good music). This one reminds me vaguely of a 90s hip-hop song. I like the sound that plays at 0:08, at it feels like the game is telling you to "Go, Go, GO" and escape from the Vietnam village.

That's the most hilarious game over music I've ever heard in a video game, especially when you said it gave you nightmares. It sounds like one of those heart beating background music used in sci-fi shows, horror shows, or movies when a person is about to die and needs help by a doctor or nurse to stay alive.

They also put that theme, during the beginning of the game. But I prefer Perfect Dark than Goldeneye, simply because of its gameplay, voice acting, and soundtrack. Goldeneye has nothing compared to that majesty.

It's still not as terrifying as the burglar music from The Sims 1!  Nor is it as devastating a game over theme as this:

Sonic CD's gameover music usually gets to me when I was younger.

Funny how in Europe and Japan they got a different version of the Gameover theme.

You're not kidding. I actually tried accomplishing these fears of certain 90s game over screens a long time ago and it didn't work.  :\'(. The DKC trilogy game over screens were some of the scariest I've seen. It made me not want to see those again.

I hardly remember any music that scared me when I was a child. If there was any it probably depended on the pitch it was on. There's some music out there that if you kept the pitch or semitones the way it is it would sound real perfect and peaceful to me, but if you took the exact same music and change the pitch or semitones on audacity or something it would end up sounding really scary.

Not many game songs have scared me, but I would say this one comes close (if it can even be considered a song). It's almost like a real-life Creepypasta:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhnsNvFGjMI&t=3m54s

Imagine children in 1991 sitting upstairs playing this game at night, expecting the next level to have the usual 8-bit music...and then getting THIS. :o

It seems like Action 52 (both versions) is a well for nightmare fuel in general. Just listen to this very unfitting song from the Genesis version:
