Subject: Which part of the 1990s would you like to relive or experience?

Written By: TheReignMan99 on 04/08/17 at 5:13 pm

It doesn't matter if you experienced the '90s or not. If we could time travel back in time and not be able to change the future...which part of the 1990s would you like to relive (go back and experience) or experience (if you were too young or weren't born yet)?.

The Early 1990s (1990-1993)?

The Mid 1990s (1994-1996)?

The Late 1990s (1997-1999)?

I was born in the late '90s (1999) but for me personally I would want to experience the early '90s. Based on my observations on the pop culture, TV shows, movies, music and fashion of the early '90s, etc was the most appealing to me and I wish I could have experienced it all. The mid '90s were a close second in my opinion. The late '90s was very cheesy and honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the late '90s, lol.

So what part of the "last decade of the 20th century" would you want to go back to or experience?  8)

If I went to a time machine only exclusive to January 1, 1990 - December 31, 1999, I would want it to go to the years 1991-1996 (the core 90's) for me.

Grunge, classic euro-dance, SNES/Sega Genesis, long hair was still a little popular, Beavis and Butthead, Golden Age Nickelodeon, etc. However, I like the 80's better than the 90's in terms of pop culture.

That's another thing in which The Early 90s Guy argues about. I remember one time we argued about 1993 and I said that it was an early 90s year. But to his case, it was a mid 90s year because it was part of the core 90s or something.

You do realize that 1993 can be placed in many ways right?

Thirds method: 1993 is mostly in the middle, or the early 90s if one starts the decade with 1991.

Halves: 1993 is in the 1st half.

Quarters: 1993 is in the 2nd quarter

Take your pick.

I would go back to the Mid 90s, although like T-Rex, I generally like the entire 1991-1996 period. Despite the fact that I was born in 1999, I wouldn't choose to go back to the Late 90s. Late 90s culture is far too cheesy and inauthentic for my liking. In all honesty, the only thing I really like about the Late 90s, is the excitement and build-up for the new millennium.

I'm sorry UltraGameDog but that conversation is NOT for this thread. I'm sorry, I just want to keep this thread mostly on topic. Debating whether a year is "early" or "mid" can easily get dragged out.

Oh, I understand. For some reason, he intentionally brought it up all because he saw 1993 as early 90s and that irks him.

Back to the question though, I would live in all periods of that decade because they all provided amazing pop culture.

Well DVDs were rather more expensive during the late 90s, but I wanna see when people switched between VHS and DVDs during those times. Even that doesn't really seem exciting, since I never really saw the 90s as a great decade. Also, 1997-1999 had Daria on MTV, which is pretty sweet.

'93 is the first year of the mid '90s, period. '91 and '92 side more with 1993, but they're still early '90s years because mid '90s culture (i.e. - Clarissa Explains It All, Dinosaurs, and Batman: The Animated Series) was still being introduced in those two years.

Yeah, I don't really enjoy the 90s as much as everybody who grew up with it. I should've chosen 1990-1993, but it's just like an extension of the 80s.

Yes, 1990-1993 was an extension of the '80s but particularly the late '80s (especially mid 1988-1989). The late 1980s were slightly different from the over the top cheesiness of the mid 1980s (1984-1986/1987). Personally, I just like that early '90s feel...I don't really know how to explain it.

1990 to 1993 have a 'foggy', 'older', feeling to me. In a good way of course.  8)

I'm not sure it's because I was only a toddler then, or because it actually did feel that way at the time.

That's similar to how I feel towards 2001-2003. The early '90s seems almost ancient by today's standards.

1993 as the year went on lost it's late' 80s vibe (mid 1988-1989 feel) but 1992 definitely still had that feel. However, I agree with you....give me 1990-1993/1994 anyday.

I'd also prefer the earlier part of the 90s. It felt, in my recollection, more sincere or earnest than the glitzier vibe that started around the mid 90s and picked up from there. The early 90s were before everything had to be outrageous or extreme, which was pretty fun in some ways, but did get rather shallow.

This is a tough question. I think I'll break it down by era.

The Early '90s

I'm not sure that I would say that I want to "relive" the early '90s because I was only roughly 3-5 years old during that time and my memories are rather vague. Really, I think I would rather experience the early '90s as a teenager or college kid, so I could've been apart of the Grunge explosion of 1991-92 and experienced that first hand. It also would've been interesting to have experienced other events during these years like the fall of the Soviet Union, the Gulf War and the 1992 election as a young adult instead of a preschooler/kindergartner.

The Mid '90s

Now this era I would love to re-experience. Being in elementary school during the mid '90s was awesome. You had so many cool fads like Pogs/slammers and Goosebumps books, plus Golden Age Nickelodeon, early Cartoon Network, the last days of pay Disney Channel, the peak of the SNES vs. Genesis console war and beginning of the 32/64-bit era of gaming, the MMPR fad, the height of Fox Kids, Saturday morning cartoons still being dominant, and far too many other things for me to list here. I would love to go back to these days. 8)

It would also be pretty neat to have been a teen during this time as well, though. The day Kurt Cobain died would've been like my Kennedy assassination, I would've followed major events like the OKC Bombing and the O.J. Simpson trial closer than I did as a kid, and I would've been able to enter the workforce during a time of economic prosperity, and certainly would've had a much easier time finding a job than in 2009-10.

The Late '90s

I think that this is my answer, though. The late '90s are like my "sweet spot". I was ages 10-12, so I was still a kid, but also old enough to really start getting into music and pop culture. The death of Princess Diana, the Clinton impeachment and Columbine are all events that I remember crystal clearly, particularly Columbine, which had an effect on me for the rest of my school career. I started buying CDs around this time, mostly in the form of garbage like Limp Bizkit, Korn, Creed, Kid Rock, and my life in 1999 revolved around rushing back from school so I could watch Toonami and TRL. I also spent ridiculous amounts of hours playing Super Mario 64, Final Fantasy, Spyro the Dragon, Mario Kart 64, Metal Gear Solid, Banjo Kazooie and Pokemon Red and Blue on my Game Boy.

Honestly, as cheesy as I know the late '90s were, I'd give anything to go back and relive those days. I honestly think they were the best of my life. All my childhood friends still lived nearby, the world felt much "bigger" since the internet was still a luxury item that my parents didn't even have yet, and I lived a carefree existence that largely revolved around going to middle school, riding my bike, watching MTV, and playing Nintendo 64. Fun times. 8)

Yes. It's tough, because really all three "eras" of the '90s are awesome in their own right, but when it comes to my own life the late '90s is what I would most want to relive.

Most of my friends were still into Guns 'N Roses at that time. The Grunge trend was more of a mid '90s thing than early '90s.

Most of my friends were still into Guns 'N Roses at that time. The Grunge explosion was more of a mid '90s thing than early '90s.

BTW, how old are you/what year were you born?

Awesome. Unfortunately, I couldn't get to experience any part of the '90s because I was only born in '99 but I would like to experience the early '90s.

The reason I say that is because that was the time when My Brother was still alive before he passed away in 1995. :\'(

Late 90's (1997-1999) all the way! I love the vibe of those times. It just overall seemed to feel softer than the rest of the 90's which depending on your taste could be a good or bad thing.

Yeah, that "softer" vibe is why the late '90s is my least favorite part of the '90s and I was born in the late '90s.

1997-1998 was still "alright" to some extent. I despised 1999 when it came to music, and I thought that the Columbine shooting to some extent impacted the music industry (I'm a hard rock, heavy metal, and industrial metal guy).

I do like some hard rock songs and I like industrial rock (not really metal) but not heavy metal. 1997 was alright, 1998 was OK but 1999....8-P. Overall, I rate the late '90s as a 5.5 out of 10.

But I don't think a lot of pop culture was imitating late 80s/early 90s stuff on purpose. They didn't want to keep the same styles, so they just made new ones.

They were probably the funnest part of the decade. You had cool new bands like Nirvana so we were definitely in the 90's but you could still find the wackier styles of the 80's hanging around. I remember seeing Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey in theaters and hearing stuff like Depeche Mode and R.E.M. on the radio. Around this time my brother had an NES and a little bit later an SNES and we'd listen to the radio while playing some Mario Brothers. My brother was born in '77 so he was lucky enough to enjoy the era as a teen but I'm glad I was still old enough to at least have good memories.

If it could happen...take me to the years 1987-1995. We're basically the same...;).

Definitely the late 1990s, particularly in order to witness everyone freaking out about Y2K, as well as feel the beginning of the Harry Potter vibe. Politically speaking it would be popcorn time with the Lewinskygate.

He's overweight and after eating all those sweet things and other stuff that we go food shopping for now our doctor says that he has diabetes and cut down on items and trying to eat healthy.

I'd like to relive the mid-90s because that was one of the most all-around great times for popular culture, between the music, films, television, and technology. Fashion-wise, I strongly prefer the late 90s, but there were some positives to the mid-90s, too.

The mid-90s, particularly 1996 and sporadic parts of 1995, are the earliest period which I have personal memories of, but since I was just a toddler, I never got to enjoy any of the real culture that it provided at the time it was new, with the closest exceptions being Disney movies like The Hunchback of Notre Dame. In an alternate reality, I wish I had been a teenager during the mid-90s.

You were born in 1992, right?

The mid '90s were a close second for me after the early '90s. In an alternate reality, I just wish that I was a young person from 1987-1995/1996 instead of being born in 1999 (but whatever....).

Since I'd ultimately prefer to experience the '80s firsthand, it's obviously going to be the early '90s (especially 1990 and '91), due to lingering '80s influences still around (Big hair, some neon, end of the Cold War era, Madonna/Michael Jackson/Prince/NES still popular, TMNT and New Jack Swing at its peak, hip hop that was really hip, Johnny Carson still the host of The Tonight Show, shopping malls still a hot destination, lively dance clubs playing house music, and '60s/early '70s nostalgia much more accessible. I could still have a modem and enjoy the primitive version of the Internet before it became mainstream via Prodigy or some other early online service, yet find it more enduring to use a VHS camcorder.

I like how the early 90's didn't overdo the whole earth tones revival like the mid 90's did. While 1992 in general was still a very 90's feeling year, wearing Keith Haring designs and crazy pastel neon colors was still very popular like in 1984-1989 but you also saw a lot of the earthy 70's-revival colors being worn, too.

1991/1992 looked like all this at the same time:

I always thought that Judge Claude Frollo was the most evil Disney villain. He tried to kill a woman's baby (a baby Quasimodo), attempted Gypsy genocide, tried to kill Esmeralda after she says "sanctuary", probably killed Quasimodo's mother, and he also basically imprisoned Quasimodo in the cathedral and never allowed him to go outside just because he thinks everyone will hate Quasimodo, has huge lust on Esmeralda, and burned Paris to the ground just so that he could search for the gypsy girl.

Even though it is popular to say that Scar from The Lion King was the most evil Disney villain, I think that Claude Frollo should be number one in terms of "most evil".

OK. However, 1990 and 1991 were a continuation of the late '80s (especially 1988 and 1989) not the core '80s. The core '80s...I'm not really a fan of.

True, but I'm just not a fan of the 80s... ultra-conservative politics, visual ugliness/tackiness, War on Drugs, high urban crime rates, etc. The only thing I like about the 80s is that my two favorite sports teams, the LA Lakers and LA Dodgers, had successful championship runs.

Truth be told, however, I often wonder what it would've been like to experience the 90s as a teenager. As much as I'm not envious of Xennials' 80s experience, I will concede that their 90s youth was probably WAY cooler than my 00s youth. The 00s were an awful time to be a teenager IMO.

Fair enough. However, just like today they are areas that are more safe than others. The War on Drugs still goes on and conservative politics definitely still exists with Trump being President and the Republicans having full control over both houses of Congress.

You can't compare the society we live in today to that of 30-35 years ago. Think about how much progress has been made since then. HIV/AIDS is not an automatic death sentence as once thought, a black man was just the leader of the free world for 8 years and should've been succeeded by a woman (setting another major precedent), uncomfortable discussions surrounding social issues are now being confronted head-on rather than being avoided as "taboo," etc.

A Black man (Jesse Jackson) ran for President in 1984 and 1988 and he nearly won the Democratic Party nomination in '84. There is also still many topics that are taboo but yes some issues aren't taboo anymore. Also, you didn't mentioned HIV/AIDS in your original comment and either way...it's not like if you went to the 1980s you would get HIV/AIDS or something.

Lucky you. My true teenage years (14-17) were all post-millennium and pre-Obama. Think emo music and every other American teenager wearing clothes from Abercrombie/Hollister/American Eagle/Aeropostale and thinking they were "cool." A very awkward time to be a teenager.

I would have loved to have been a child in the 80's, and a teenager in the 90's. That way, I would have gotten to experience two great decades. An ideal year for me to be born would be 1976/1977.

Ditto. Come to think of it, an 80s childhood and a 00s youth probably cancel each other out.

I think someone born in 1985 had it best. Completely a child of the 90s, too young to really remember much of the 80s, and had most of their teenage years pre-9/11.

Woah wait, I loved American Eagle/Aeropostale. It was colourful, casual, and affordable on my high school budget. ;D

Ideally, I would have want to been born 1970-1975 (especially 1970-1972).

I'm mostly happy with the year I was born, but being born in the early '70s would be cool for the late '70s/early '80s arcade games. :D

Yes. Not only that but if you and I were born in the early 1970s we would have spent all of our "core" adolescence in the 1980s 8). Awesome.

Pre-Ellen DeGeneres years were awful for LGBT community. I know she's not the end all and be all of it, but she did help LGBT people become more accepted.

It can't be any worse than being a teen during a time of EDM, Ariana Grande, trap music, IS and worldwide terrorism. The Mid 2010s would have to be one of the worst periods of time in recent memory to experience adolescent years.

I love 1983 to 1995, as an era. So 1983 to 1989 is the sweet spot, baby! I don't mind 1980 to 1982, though, but they're not my favorite.

Yeah. I have been a teen since 2012 and this decade is not a great one culturally to have been a teenager. Next year is my last year of being a teen...woo hoo.

OK cool. 1987-1989 is my favorite part of the '80s by far. If it was possible I would want to be transported to the years 1987-1995/1996.

Oh man, I'd love to go back to 1990-1993, especially my time in Germany when I was in the Army.

Although I didn't really care for the military all that much it was still one of the best times of my life and I'd go back to it in a nanosecond.

I mean the beginning of its cultural relevance. The internet was essentially unknown outside of the tech community and military prior to 1993-94.
