Subject: Jamming on the roof at the end of 90s-style music videos

Written By: Stillinthe90s on 04/20/17 at 6:50 pm

Have you ever noticed this? I've seen lots of videos where the group or singer is doing one thing for about the first half, then the video transitions to the band jamming on the roof of a building.

Here's two examples,

The Old Apartment by Barenaked Ladies,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ggJS0p-QQc

In this one, there's an old apartment, which the song is about, and scenes of a couple in that apartment. Then later the band is jamming on the roof, perhaps of that apartment building, at night with the Toronto skyline in the background.

In this video, of Breathing by Lifehouse (yeah, it's from 2000 but it has a 90s sound), the guy is going around in a taxi observing people and the seeming surreal nature of the world (pretty 90s content) and at the end the band is jamming on the roof of a building at night. It's a slower song, but that's band jamming for sure.

I know I've seen other examples but can't think of them off the top of my head. Anyone else have examples?

A similar theme is in this video, Mariah Carey's Fantasy,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qq09UkPRdFY

At first she's roller blading and riding a roller coaster in the daytime at an amusement park, and in the second part of the video everyone's dancing in the parking lot at night. It's kind of like the pop music video version of a rock band jamming on the roof at the end of a video.

It's an interesting structure for music videos.

(Actually, this video structure probably features in a lot of 2000s videos too, so feel free to bring them up as examples.)

Well, I think the first video is probably paying homage to The Beatles.  I'm not sure about the others.

Incidentally, The Beatles weren't the first ones to do the rooftop concert thing.  Jefferson Airplane did it before them.
