Subject: Underrated, Forgotten songs from the '90s

Written By: HazelBlue99 on 04/23/17 at 5:42 am

Since we have an 80s and 2000s version of this topic...

Comedown - Bush (1995) - One of my favourite songs. This song is often overlooked by it's Sixteen Stone counterpart, "Glycerine", and other 90s grunge/post-grunge artists.

That Ain't Bad - Ratcat (1990) - This song (and band) deserved to achieve more success than it did. It was probably released a bit too early, as alternative rock had yet to break into the mainstream when this was released in Late 1990. However, with that said, it did manage to reach #1 on the Australian charts in Early 1991 and the band also had two other hits; "Don't Go Now" and "Baby, Baby". After the success of the three songs and the EP, however, the band had completely disappeared from the mainstream and they were never able to release another Top-50 single. If this had of been released two or three years later, it quite possibly could have achieved international success as well.

Spaceman - Babylon Zoo (1996)

Lakini's Juice - Live (1997) - This is my favourite song from Live. Most people overlook this song in favour of more successful hits, such as "Lightning Crashes" and "I Alone".

Seether - Veruca Salt (1994)

Love Rollercoaster - Red Hot Chili Peppers (1996) - A Red Hot Chili Peppers song with Beavis and Butthead in the music video. You can't get any more 90s/Gen X then that. :P

Patty Smyth of Scandal has such a great voice, far more soulful than the nasally, pseudo-emotional vocal style popular in this type of music nowadays. It makes for a truly wonderful 80s-becoming-90s pop rock song, which, unlike her previous single with Don Henley, didn't chart super high on the Billboard Hot 100 and only achieved decent success on the Mainstream Top 40. This song is particularly special to me, however, because its parent album was released the exact day I was born.

In my opinion, an enormous improvement over the original by Chaka Khan, which is good but doesn't have the most effective production. Here, however, not only do you get an utterly phenomenal buildup during the intro, the track feels thoroughly alive thanks to a winning mixture of world music influences, a fresh and funky new jack swing beat, and a soft yet passionate vocal performance by the singer known primarily for "Shy Guy."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hX5CyiRYzWo
An absolute jackpot of a eurodance classic, yet sadly a relative chart failure, probably because mid-90s eurodance was on the decline in 1996 in the UK, its only charting territory.

"Foolish Games" by Jewel (1997)

Collective Soul FTW.  ;)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grt_iG8kzrs

There is a significant amount of controversy about the song. For one, though it was long denied by Collective soul lead singer Ed Roland, the song is about Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins. It was long denied partly because Ed Roland as a whole seems rather disinclined to comment specifically on the inspiration of his songs, especially when they reflect negatively on others. This is a virtuous position (though not one I personally take), but the song makes much greater sense when one sees the influence of Billy Corgan’s hostility on Collective Soul. The Smashing Pumpkins were once a tremendously influential modern rock band, and they were already successful when Collective Soul had their first hit with “Shine.” Immediately, and without investigating, Billy Corgan loudly insulted the band Collective Soul and claimed in a lawsuit that the band had ripped off their song “Rhinocerous” in “Shine.” As it happens, the song “Shine” came from a 1987 Ed Roland demo that long preceded the obscure “Rhinocerous,” and the lawsuit was dismissed.

The Refreshments are well known for doing the King of the Hill theme (great show BTW) but they also had two fairly successful hits on the rock chart back in 1996.

In 1990 Queensryche released Empire, which was a triple-platinum (3,000,000 copies) selling album that reached #7 on the Billboard charts.

Although I occasionally hear Jet City Woman on the local rock stations, I think this song is much better and I haven't heard it on the radio in probably 20 years.

Oh man you left the vocals out, which IMO were the best part of the song! :( :( :(

I love Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson's harmonizing in Roam, they give me goosebumps every time I hear it.

I'm sorry, but posting this song without the vocal track is criminal enough that it merits a fudge.

This one's actually called "I Want You", but it was still a modest hit around early 1997 in the US.

Really? I always thought "Loser" was one of the definitive alternative anthems of the 1990s, next to "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Even well beyond 1994, it has shown up all over the radio and 90s nostalgia media.

This was released in 1997 by the American group, Marcy Playground. A lot of people mistake this as a Nirvana song, but the release date alone should surely suggest that it isn't a Nirvana song...I personally don't think there is a resemblance. "Sex and Candy" peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts in Late 1997, #8 on the ARIA charts and #29 on the UK charts. It was the band's only major hit. The Wikipedia page lists "Sex and Candy" as a Grunge song, but I personally think it's more of an alternative rock song or "post-grunge", at the very least.

I remember first hearing this song when I saw Jurassic Park at a drive in theater with my parents and some family friends in 1993. Two movies played back to back, What's Love Got to Do with It and then Jurassic Park. By the time Jurassic Park came on, it was dark and drizzly.

This song played, I think, during the end credits of the first movie. It's a good song.

Well, Beck is from Southern California (Los Angeles)...so I'm inclined to bet it's because of that reason and because his aesthetic fits the SoCal vibe. Here in NYC, I haven't ever heard any of his song on the radio.

I'm surprised; I thought he'd be popular all over the U.S.

He also had a hit on the Modern Rock charts in 1996 with "Where It's At", from his album Odelay. That one features the recurring line "Two turn tables and a microphone!"

Adam Ant was absolutely enormous in Great Britain throughout the early 80s, but he only had 3 notable hits in the United States, two of which were from the 1990s, this being one of them. Although I believe I remember hearing it on the radio where I lived quite a bit growing up, it was only a modest chart hit and doesn't even have a Wikipedia page. It's virtually the polar opposite of Ant's signature sound, trading in his stormy percussion and off the wall lyrics for a gentle, breezy, earnest, and acoustic pop rock song, but it has all the same capacity for subtle quirks, from its catchy syncopation, to its fresh melodic hooks, to its layered use of guitar riffs, all compiled into a smooth and excellent phrased track with its own flair or charm.

This is a beautiful piano-driven rock ballad with a particularly intriguing lyrical focus on the cultures of different European cities in contrast to the subject's depressing hometown. Unfortunately, it only peaked at #18 on the UK singles chart, was not an international hit, and has no Wikipedia page.

This is a very underrated song and it deserved to have been an international hit, in my opinion. "Coma" by Australian artist, Max Sharam. It peaked at #14 on the Australian charts in 1994, but it never charted in any other country. Unfortunately, the song has been largely forgotten about. I don't think I have ever heard it being played on the radio before, despite the fact that it was successful at the time of its release.

The song peaked at #23 on the Australian charts at the time. It's a shame that they are so many good songs out there which simply don't get the recognition that they deserve. Most people remember this Babyface clone as a one-hit wonder for "Nobody Knows," but he actually had this second, albeit significantly less popular hit later in 1996. In my opinion, it's an absolute gem and far outmatches its more mainstream predecessor. The diverse array of acoustic percussive instruments, the funky groove, and the tastefully soulful vocal melody make for one of the slickest r&b songs of the entire decade. Montell Jordan released a very similar song called "Falling" a few months later, but it's nowhere near as good, even though it was more commercially successful.

Terrible Lie by Nine Inch Nails. The album Pretty Hate Machine was released in late 1989, so its popularity was mainly in the early to mid 90s. I can recall hearing Terrible Lie on the radio as late as the late 90s. I specifically recall hearing it on the car radio while my sister, mother, and myself were going to a haunted house on a late evening in October of what must have been 1997 or 1998.

That is quite interesting. This must have been a follow-up single that was a flop; I actually never heard it. Thanks for sharing. O0

You're welcome! Yeah, it just barely missed the Top 40, peaking at #41, though it charted slightly higher on the Mainstream Top 40, at #28. It's on my custom-compiled Totally Hits album representing late 1996.

I've compiled track lists for other custom Totally Hits albums, but I haven't yet designed custom artwork. If you're wondering why certain huge songs from certain times are missing, it's because those were made by labels primarily associated with Now That's What I Call Music!, prior to the death of Totally Hits in 2006. Totally Hits primarily includes songs from labels like Warner Bros., Atlantic, Arista, Elektra, Maverick, Reprise, RCA, Big Beat, and BMG. Now would include labels like Virgin, EMI, MCA, Mercury, A&M, Interscope (after they departed from Atlantic in 1995), Jive (after 1992, since they were originally associated with Arista and RCA before operating independently with Zomba), Polydor, Capitol, Columbia, and Epic.

I've created a whole bunch of custom now albums, but I haven't gotten as creative with the cover designs, since it's very difficult to create something as advanced as the typical abstract images and 3D text present on the American and UK Now albums. Instead, for my iTunes playlist, I typically just take the corresponding UK now album and modify it to look like an American cover. For the 90s entries, I just take whatever the corresponding UK album cover was and add text and maybe realign the image to look like something from the American series. For the 80s, since the modern cover design didn't yet exist, I do the process to year-specific side-compilations from the UK. For the 70s, since there aren't year-based Now compilations, I instead give a home to these fake Now album covers.

This is such an underrated song. It only peaked at #72 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, although it did reach #1 on the Mainstream Rock Chart. The song also charted in Canada, however it didn't chart anywhere else. "Listen" should have been one of the biggest hits of 1997.

I think this song tends to be overlooked a lot. It was Stone Temple Pilot's first ever single release. The song peaked at #55 on the UK charts and #23 on Billboard Rock Tracks chart. To be honest, I actually think that this is their best song.

I'd never thought that highly of Alanis Morrisette before, but then a few days ago I stumbled across this song (which I'd never heard before) and I think it's amazing:
