Subject: Most popular rock group each year of the 90s? (Gen Xers answer only please)

For people who were over 12 for a majority of the 90s -
Who would you say were the three most popular rock bands (regardless of subgenre) each year of the 1990s?
IE let's say 1991:
1) Guns N' Roses
2) Metallica
3) Nirvana
Please do it like that and also include whatever memories you have of reactions to band/albums on the part of your peer group.

Too tough a task for most people lol. You'd have to be a real metalhead to gauge the popularity too.
