Subject: What are the cultural hallmarks of the Y2K Era?

Written By: 90s Guy on 03/18/18 at 11:09 pm

As stated in the title, what are the cultural (music, TV, fashion) hallmarks of the Y2K era? Also, what year do you first remember hearing the term "Y2K" used to describe the Millennium Bug? When do you remember the Y2K apocalypse hype becoming big?

I'm in the mood to list all the Y2K movies I think best capture that era, so...I'm just gonna do that right now. :P BTW, I'm gonna avoid listing movies popular or otherwise that didn't really say much about the era. If you're wondering about why I listed any particular movie, just ask.

Quintessential Y2K Era Films

Bring It On
Josie And The Pussycats
The Matrix
American Beauty
Fight Club
Queen of the Damned
Scary Movie 1 and 2
Coyote Ugly
Scooby Doo
Spider-Man
Dude, Where's My Car
American Pie 1 and 2
Legally Blond
There's Something About Mary
Rushmore
Enemy of the State
Shrek
Spy Kids
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace

That's all until I think up more.

I've watched most of these  8)

It's interesting to me how some movies such as American Beauty feel a lot more late '90s while other like Dude, Where's My Car? look strictly 2000s.

I felt odd putting American Beauty, The Matrix, Rushmore, and Fight Club on my list because of their unique late 90s feel but without that aspect, there'd be no Y2K era.

I have a love and hate relationship with that movie. I read the book in preparation for the movie but the movie turned out to be a nu-metal masterpiece...as opposed to an Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles' novel adaptation. Plus, I was really big into Aaliyah a little before that time so I had to go and support the movie in honor of her death.
