Subject: How Long Ago the 90s Were

Written By: SeaCaptainMan97 on 03/28/18 at 11:51 pm

How long ago do the 90s feel to you?
For many, they still feel pretty recent. It was the decade the majority of users on this forum were either born in (myself included), grew up as as kid in, or both.
Back in the 00s, which for many on this forum feels like yesterday, the 90s were the previous decade, so of course then they felt recent, because they were recent.
The explosion of the whole "90s Kid" nostalgia thing didn't make the 90s feel any less recent, since it was mostly young people taking part in that nostalgia circle jerk.

But now in 2018, when you think about it, the 90s are no longer as recent as we've associated them as for all this time. Consider the following;

- Everyone who was alive in the 90s, even as an newborn infant, is an adult now.

- Most people that were teenagers in the 90s are now halfway through their lives.

- World War II veterans in the 90s were the same age as Baby Boomers are now.

- As stated in a previous thread, a dog or cat born in the 90s is mostly likely dead by now.

- The year 1990 is closer in time to pre-Civil Rights times than it is to today.

- In only a couple more years, we'll be closer in time to 2050 than to 1990.

How old does this make you all feel?

Doesn't make me feel any type of way.

I wasn't alive in the 90's, so it's not really going to make me feel as shocked as if we were talking about the 2000's, which is a decade I have (but not fully) experienced.

What's really shocking is that as of today, we are closer to January 1st, 2020 than any date before June 23, 2016.

The 90's have never felt recent to me, I remember seeing a comment on YouTube saying 1997 was 10 years ago as a kid in 2007 and I thought that was a really long time ago at the time, especially since 10 years was 2 years longer than I'd even been alive at the time.

The statement I bolded is false. Everything else is true.

I only existed in the 1990s for 5 months and 18 days. The only thing about the '90s that makes me feel old is the fact that next year, I will be 2 decades old.

Yeah, same here. The 90's have never felt recent to me.

I'd even go as far to say the whole 2000's are no longer recent. Yes, 2009 did bring us early 2010's culture, but early 2010's culture itself is already dated as well.

True. Age can play a factor in how you see decades. The 80's, for example, seem ancient to me, but they will seem just like yesterday to someone who was a teenager then.

I'd agree, I've seen 2009 as not recent for a few years now, 2013 is what I'd consider the first recent year now that we're in 2018, personally.

The 2000s will fell ancient to kids who were born in the 2010s but to people like me who grew up in the '00s...they were most certainly not ancient.

Thinking about this, I really do feel old.  At 32, there is a good chance my life is a little less than half over by now provided I live a normal-length lifespan.  32 feels way scary compared to 22, especially considering how this last decade of my life has gone.  Also, the 90s was the decade of GenX youth culture and today, GenX are mostly 40-somethings and some are even in their 50s.

I want it to be 1998 again just for one day, and meet all my relatives who've passed away since then. Go back to 1999 and meet all my old friends in one place too, and everyday.

What a time. And it's never coming back.  :-\\

And to think the average life expectancy dropped in the US for a second year in a row due to the obesity and opioid epidemics. I thought we'd be getting to common lifespans of 100 pretty soon but I guess not  :o

I get confused on how everyone uses ancient on here though, I don't even see the 1700's as ancient, when I think ancient, I'm thinking like 2000 BC.

The 90s seem to be like an interesting decade to learn about and seemed to be an important improvement over the 80s in many ways (and just generally bucked down a lot of awful trends that were rampant since the 60s).

There are not THAT long ago, yet everyone acts like that decade was some sort golden era that took place a 100 years ago ???

Doesn't it seem old that I sorta remember the 1992 election and George H W Bush being president a little? It's pretty scary I remember stuff like that. I remember the roads still having many 1970s cars and cigarette billboards plastered all over the place. A 32 inch TV was huge. A portable CD player was cool technology.

But then again, I lived through the 2010's and I didn't live in the 90's (was born then, but my first memories are from 2001/02, so it's weird to think I was actually alive then), so that plays a part in why I like the 10's more.

I don't think anything right now makes me feel as old as the 2017 film version of It. The original movie was released back in 1990, and the completely and utterly vintage year of 1960 was the setting of the kid section of the story. The remake has the distant kid past as 1989; I wasn't yet alive that year, but it still feels very homely to me because of how much more sophisticated music, technology, social attitudes, and other such things were by then, with many of what it produced still feeling pretty current during my childhood. The fact that 1989 is basically now a completely antiquated period whose culture belonged to the parents of toady just feels awkward to me.

1990 to 1997 felt distinct to me because it felt like a different era. Not a lot of things I remember growing up happened by that time. By 1998 and 1999, it felt somewhat relatable towards my childhood because I grew up with most of the things that happened. Even though I remember the mid and late 2000s as my childhood, seeing pop culture from 1998 and 1999 was still common to see because they still aired cartoons from that time period when I was growing up.

Being interested in cars from a very early age I clearly remember when the streets were full of '80s cars. There was a '70s Plymouth in the parking lot of my preschool that seemed so ancient, but now I was born closer to a few years of the '70s than today. I still think of a 1997 car as pretty new. But, of course cars last longer now too.
Pretty soon I will have been born closer to the Gerald Ford presidency and the Mary Tyler Moore Show than today.

The 1990s didn't start feeling retro to me at least until 2014. That was when I started seeing all these 90s kids memes on Facebook whereas before most of the 90s nostalgia I saw was on Youtube, TeenNick and forum sites like here and ign. The first time I heard anyone refer to the 90s as old was back in 2006 or 07 when I was watching a re-run of smartguy. My cousin told me that the clothes they were wearing is out of style and it's from the 90s. I was pretty shocked because I never heard anyone older me referred  to the 90s as old at the time. To me the 90s were old because I was a baby then, but to someone like my cousin (who's born in 92) who experienced the late 90s as a kid, it was a shock. Even in 2010, most people viewed 1999 as recent even though the technology gap was much bigger than compared to now vs 2007.

Some say that 2000's culture started in 1998. Most things that were popular well into the 2000's weren't around in 1997 and prier.

I say 1995 was the birth of the new millennium feel with the release of the PS1  (the first modern cd base console), sitcoms like friends being on its first season, the birth of WB and UPN networks, the release of the first Friday movie and the release of Toy Story (first modern CGI movie). Things that were relevant or that set the tone for what will be popular in the 2000s.

I agree with you. 1995-1999 has a Millennium era feel that distinguishes from the first half of the 90's (1990-1994.)

Never considered them recent OR ancient. Kinda in-between.

Hey that's cool. You should create a new thread and do the same thing but with the 2010s.

Yeah don’t listen to those people. If they have a problem with your profile it’s their problem not yours. You did absolutely nothing wrong

Gene in a bottle doesen't sound like it came out in 1999, maybe because I never listened to any of Christiana Alguera songs before. Gene in a bottle can definitely pass as a 2000s song.

1999 and most of 1998 don't really feel that far back. A lot of the stuff from this period was still relevant or recent during the first half of my childhood, also I think the late 90s is still the earliest era which still has some connections to today. For example, things from 1999 just look really dated....watch a video from 1990 and it feels worlds away.
