Subject: Could someone in 2018 get away with wearing these?

Written By: All_about_lily92 on 04/17/18 at 3:41 pm

The other day I was reading an article on buzzfeed about “Delia’s essential items for back to school 1996” and I noticed how “modern” some of the clothing looked despite them being over 20 years old. I mean there was an obvious “90ness” about the clothing, but they didn’t look all that dated either if that makes sense. A lot of it reminded me of some of the styles you see at h&m/urban outfitters/Asos. I feel like y2k era fashion is slowly creeping back in.

I know what you mean. I watched a 1993 episode of Roseanne a couple of weeks and the fashion didn't look dated at all.

I think you could get away with most fashions post-disco.

Whenever I see posts about how dated mid to late 2000s fashion is, I really don't know what people are talking about. Sure there are fashion trends but most people aren't up to speed with those trends.

Fashion stalled and stopped evolving sometime in the mid 2000s and now people do whatever they want. You can wear anything pretty much and no one will care.

Yeah, pretty much.

As long as you don't look like you're from the 1890s, most people don't care ;D.

And even then, just go to any hip city like Portland and you will see some people look like they're from the 1890s.

FWIW I wear baggy camo cargo pants, and while I feel somewhat out of place among the more slim fit trends of this era, no one really looks at me funny or makes any comments.

In all honestly, some of these items don't seem that dated in the grand scheme of things. That's mainly because, as one mentioned, the late 90s look in fashion (minimalism, name brands making a comeback, etc.) is creeping back now in the late 10s. Ironically, these clothes would've looked more dated in like 2010, but in a "eww that's so 10 years ago" kind of way. Similar to how we now vomit inside ourselves on the crap we wore back in the mid-late 2000s (too many Live Strong Bracelets to count ;D).

I've noticed that this decade, overall, seems pretty consistent with the 90s in the look and feel in fashion and how it progressed. The core 1990s (1993-1997) was an era of more natural and mute color palets and a artsy like feel in fashion due to the grunge and hip hop movements. However, the decade as a whole was straddled in between two eras of more gaudy and materialistic fashionable themes (the early 90s were a continuation of the gaudy late 80s and the late 90s were prelude on what the glamorous 00s were going to be).

Similarly in the 2010s; the early 10s was dominated by late 00s fashion trends that were more materialistic in nature (big ass Ed Hardy Shirts, Hollister hoodies, and colorful skinny jeans come to mind) as a homage to the late 1980s & early 1990s. The mid 2010s were more artsty and authentic as the hipster trend became mainstream (man buns, flannel shirts, and Timberlake boots are all the rage). Finally the late 2010s seems to be a return to the more materialistic culture in fashion (brands like FILA, Polo, and Champion making a comeback, athletic wear getting big again, and wearable tech like smartwatches being seen as fashionable as it becomes more common) as sort of a homage to the materialism of the economic boom in late 1990s and  early 2000s.

Now that you mention it, that’s so true. Skinny jeans are going out of style. I used to be obsessed with skinny jeans when I was in high school ( especially around the 2009-10 school year) but lately ive been finding myself buying looser fitted clothing. The skinny look just feels so restricting now! And you’re also right about the late 90s fashions coming back into style. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that fashion is shifting back to this aesthetic:

Ringer tees, striped t shirts, low top sneakers, and loose fitting pants. Basically that minimalist late 90s skater look.

I agree. I've also noticed from my time spent in the more upper class communities that preppy brands are making a bit of a comeback as well. Slacks, cargo shorts, 90s style short shorts, jean skirts, etc. I haven't seen these trends being rocked like that in 5-10 years. I see tons of girls on my campus wearing jean skirts now and thinking "Have I been blasted to 2008!?" ;D.

Well, I should have made it more clear that these were SUBTLE changes that I have noticed. I see it more so on social media (especially from the fashion foward people I follow on instagram), street fashion blogs, and when I go  shopping ( mostly online). I notice that super skinny jeans are slowly starting to die. Key word, slowly. So of course you still people wearing super skinny jeans but it’s not as popular as it was just a few years ago.

Im curious, where are you from? :)

Like I told the other poster, these are SUBTLE changes that I have been noticing lately.  I never said that it was anything drastic. I feel like by the end of this year and the beginning next, these changes will become more pronounced ( kind of like it did in 2008/2009).

100%. Indie kids in 2018 drool over the late 90s aesthetic. I keep up with the indie scene and am still in school myself. People dress like this all the time + use filters on their insta photos to make it look like the pic was taken on a late 90s camera (even going as far as to add a '98 timestamp in the corner). I'd say about 75% of the kids at my school still dress in classic 2010s fashion but that the other 25% go for the late 90s thing.

Oh definitely. It's derivative, unoriginal and tacky. I really don't think the late 90s aesthetic comeback is going to age well, and it's sadly so widespread now. See: the aesthetic of every popular indie artist/band right now (aka everyone who sprouted off of copying the Mac DeMarco and Tyler the Creator style of music, although Tyler actually has some pretty good stuff).

How? I'm still a teenager so this (late 2010s) is pretty much my culture. I'm being critical of it because I wish it was less derivative and less based so much on nostalgia for a time we can't even remember. Why do we have to borrow fashion trends from the late 90s instead of creating our own?

Well, to be fair, nothing is really “original” when it comes to fashion. Everything is pretty much recycled and borrowed from previous eras. Even,so-called,late 90s fashion was heavily influenced by the 70s( with a few tweaks, here and there).

This is a good place to start. Don't really feel like listing every indie act I listen to https://hypebeast.com/2017/10/best-bedroom-pop-music-clairo-zack-villere-rex-orange-county

It's missing some other major artists like Bane's World and Steve Lacy

and if you go on their instas or whatever tons of their pics are filtered like old 90s photos, some with the '98 timestamp

This music video is pretty much the epitome of what I'm talking about

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tlGUom_AV4o

I like a lot of the music and artists coming out of this movement (I listen to a lot of the ones in the list I linked). Just don't really like the whole late 90s aesthetic. It's so... tacky.

Side note: Whether or not you like trap rap (and rap itself is more than just trap rap anyway), hip hop seems to really be the only music genre that's introducing some new sounds, fashion and culture in the late 2010s.

You have a point. Maybe as the late 2010s come to a close the late 90s aesthetic revival will morph into its own thing and/or look more original in retrospect. Who knows.

True, I guess this is really just the new culture and I was being too cynical.

If anything, I feel like the indie part of your generation is so small compared to how big mine was. You might be cynical but that's okay. Every generation needs a counterpart. I had Daria.  8)

I refuse to believe I lost 110 pounds just to dress like the fat ass I was back in 5th grade again.

I finally checked out the link. There's a lot of good stuff in there. I was "chillwaver" during the "Summer of Chillwave", so it's cool to see that that sort of music is coming out of the corner it was backed into. There was a lot of buzz surrounding that kind of indie sound at the end of the 2000s and the very early 10s. It seemed like it would go mainstream but it evaporated.

90s aesthetic has been in style since the early 2010s so probably.

That's very normal and it's honestly actually pretty bland and average.
