I'd argue Millennium cultures started even in 1997.


My opinion about it:

Mid/late 1996 - Mid 1998 was the late 90's.

Late 1998 - Mid 2001 was the Y2K Age.

Late 2001 - Early/mid 2003 was the early 2000's.

Most of 1998 was pretty consistent and felt identical to most of 1997. I would say it was around October 1998 when pop culture began to transition fast.

Just ignoring decadeology isn't going to stop it. If the moderators really want to enforce this rule, they have to do something about it, whether it be deleting it or telling the user that they're going to lock it. Ignoring decadeology threads does absolutely nothing at this point, especially since most moderators don't go on here as often. If we ignore decadeology threads, they'll eventually get buried and people will just keep on making them again and again.

So is spamming threads with "Do you wanna do something that rhymes with truck?" gonna make anything better?

Better moderation and a stronger enforce on decadeology will make it better, but I barely see it on this website with the exception of the 2010's subforum.

Millennium culture was 1996-2003, encompassing the late 90s (1996-98), Y2K (1999-2000), and the early 2000s (2001-03). All three epochs were quite different, but they more or less represent the same era from a greater historical perspective.

Absolutely correct. Most of 1998 was a continuation of the second half of 1997. The 1997-98 school year was the quintessential late 90s in that remnants of mid 90s culture were essentially nonexistent, but the glossy/futuristic stuff of Y2K had yet to really emerge. In that sense, 1998 is a bit of standout year for the 90s despite the fact that it was somewhat of a bland year for film and music. Visually, I find 1998 to be easily distinguishable from its adjacent years. I watched A Perfect Murder starring Michael Douglas, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Viggo Mortensen yesterday. That film has 1998 written all over it.

I would echo the statement that the very end of 1998 began to feel different, but it was less "millenium culture" and more Y2K culture, which I feel are different. Like, I would say there are definitive differences, just in the way they felt, between 1998 and the summer of 2001 (Summer of 2001 for me is the peak of the 'Y2K/Early 00s era')
