So many to choose from... which one will I select first?

How about...

"Everything I Do, I Do It For You" by Bryan Adams:

This one began a 7-week run at #1 on the U.S. charts on this date in 1991.

Today it's a random selection for me. I choose "Carnival" by Natalie Merchant, her 1995 solo debut hit:

u1-J2tTDFk4

This is the entire album version, 6 minutes. (Actually 5 1/2 minutes, but there is a "playback" at the end for the last few seconds.)

From 1990/1991, UB40's cover of "Here I Am (Come And Take Me)":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4msPpieNUw

This version was a hit in the U.S. around mid 1991.

The 22-second "intro" is usually omitted when played on the radio. Also there is a portion during the main part of the song that is sometimes skipped over on some radio stations, namely the instrumental bridge from 2:31 to 2:51 (but I like to hear all 20 seconds of it).

I believe they were technically a one-hit-wonder group, although another single from them did chart in the UK. Stay was a Number One hit for six weeks in the UK as well as in Australia, Japan and most of Europe. Siobhan Fahey from Bananarama (and ex-wife of The Eurythmic's Dave Stewart) was co-founder of the band with American-born singer Marcella Detroit.

Apparently it did get released as a single in '99 but must not have done well on the charts, if at all. I for one have not heard it on radio, for one thing.

However, their album Fever In Fever Out, which contained the single "Naked Eye", did spawn two other singles ("Under Your Skin" and "Why Do I Lie"), one of which was featured on the soundtrack to the movie Good Will Hunting (which I've seen, but didn't pay attention to any music).

I remember that one very well from 1997. At the time I was surprised that a song with that title was allowed to get radio airplay. But then again, the Rolling Stones also had a song with that name from their 1971 album Sticky Fingers (and remains a hit on classic rock radio), and Elton John scored a hit later in the 1970s with that word in the title ("The Bitch Is Back").

I also think the artist, Meredith Brooks, ended up being a one hit wonder with that song (at least as a soloist).

From wiki:

Two years after her death, Cassidy's music was brought to the attention of British audiences, when her versions of "Fields of Gold" and "Over the Rainbow" were played by Mike Harding and Terry Wogan on BBC Radio 2. Following the overwhelming response, a camcorder recording of "Over the Rainbow", taken at Blues Alley in Washington by her friend Bryan McCulley, was shown on BBC Two's Top of the Pops 2. Shortly afterwards, the compilation album Songbird climbed to the top of the UK Albums Chart, almost three years after its initial release. The chart success in the United Kingdom and Ireland led to increased recognition worldwide. Her posthumously released recordings, including three UK number-one records, have sold more than ten million copies. Her music has also charted within the top 10 in Australia, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.

Yesterday was Bonnie Raitt's 69th birthday, and she had a number of hits during the 1990s.

Here is a single of hers that was a hit around late 1991/early 1992 (from her 1991 album Luck Of The Draw), "Not The Only One":

Jurassic Park a parody of MacArthur Park

I recall the time they
found those fossilized mosquitos
and before long they were cloning
DNA.

Now I'm being chased by
some irate velociraptors
well, believe me, this has
been one lousy day

Jurassic Park is frightening in the dark
all the dinosaurs are running wild
someone shut the fence off in the rain
I admit it's kind of eerie
but this proves my chaos theory
and I don't think I'll be coming back again
oh no!

I cannot approve of this attraction
cause getting disemboweled always
makes me kind of mad.
A huge tyrannosaurus ate our lawyer
well, I suppose that proves they're
really not all bad.

Jurassic Park is frightening  in the dark
all the dinosaurs are running wild
Someone let t-rex out of his pen
I'm afraid those things will harm me
cause they sure don't act like Barney
and they think that I'm their dinner
not their friend oh no!

Jurassic Park is frightening in the dark
all the dinosaurs are running wild
what a crummy weekend this has been
Well this sure ain't no ticket
think I'll tell em where to stick it
Cause I'm never coming back this way again!
Oh no! OH NO!

Because I LIKE that song. I'm not sure what "horror porn" is, and I'm not all that familiar with most of M Manson's music, but "The Dope Show" is a very good song. Strong echoes of 70s glam, specifically Bowie and T. Rex, which is obvious to the knowledgeable music listener. Even the photograph that accompanies the song in the Youtube clip I posted is a direct homage to the photo of David Bowie on the inner gatefold sleeve of his classic 1973 album "Aladdin Sane". The knowledgeable listener knows this, or if they don't they are eager to learn.

This was their debut single, from their debut album Under The Table And Dreaming. The instrumental break contains a sax solo from the late LeRoi Moore (a founding member of the band) immediately followed by harmonica-playing from Jon Popper, the frontman of Blues Traveler.

This one is semi-appropriate for today, for two reasons. First, the singer turns 72 today. Secondly, the title sorta has something to do with Easter (candy is often associated with holidays like Easter).

That was the best song by them. Totally early 90s, also, because Spanish language was popular in America at that time. The most popular dance at the turn of the 90s was a Brazilian dance called “The Lambada” after all.

Roxette - Joyride (1991)

xCorJG9mubk

This was Roxette’s downfall moment to people who loved their 80s and very early 90s music (“It Must Have Been Love”), but surprisingly enough, Gen Xers have never forgotten it. “Joyride” wasn’t their most hated song, but some people just can’t listen to it.

The early 90s pretty much belonged to the newer artists like The Black Crowes, Mariah Carey, C & C Music Factory, and The Heights, but all of the 90s work from older artists that were in the music game is better than anything on the radio today.

Never heard the album version. Who knew in 1991 that Christian singer Amy Grant would put out pop songs? It was mind blowing at the time, wasn’t it? All we knew Amy Grant for before her Heart In Motion album was “The Next Time I Fall” and maybe her Target Christmas commercials.

Heart In Motion was her best album and made 1991 for me and many others like me the lighthearted year of the early 90s. I like “Lucky One” from her second album, but even then, it sounded like all of her other songs from Heart In Motion. I prefer Heart In Motion to House of Love.

Ah…the early 90s. The days of the 90s when it seemed like everyone was trying to change the world for the better. Only problem with that was there isn’t a way to help a selfish world. A selfish world will always be what it was intended to be. Still, the early 90s were a cooler and modern version of the late 60s. I miss them dearly every day.

I liked "Lucky One" from her House Of Love album too. However, there were two different mix versions of that one. A bland-sounding one (which might have been the album version) and a mix with more upbeat-sounding instrumentation. I like the latter better, and I think I shared it on another thread.

In fact, I was a big fan of her music during the 1990s.

It’s really too bad that nostalgists forget her pop tunes and skip to talking about grunge and gangsta music whenever the 90s come up in a discussion online or away from the computer.

Yeah, a lot of songs in those subgenres seemed to dominate the 90s. ::) The subgenre known as alternative rock also took off greatly.

I never knew she had a second album. Of course, it was the 90s. Gen X artists were everywhere still, even if their efforts were not successful. Sybil’s cover of Dionne Warwick’s “Don’t Make Me Over” was that whole 1989 into the early 90s period for a lot of people. The 1989 single “Don’t Make Me Over” was very much of its time and that’s why a lot of Gen Xers loved dancing to it. “Don’t Make Me Over” rarely gets radio airplay in this century (most people prefer Soul II Soul to Sybil), but listening to it every time takes people who were alive then back to the days of Technotronic and Suzanne Vega with DNA.

oh yes... Extreme was actually a rock band, and had some "hard rock" tracks on their albums, but this one, an acoustic ballad, proved to be the band's biggest hit. (It was a U.S. chart topper in June 1991.) Lead singer Gary Cherone later went on to join Van Halen.

You are right. I screwed up. When I first looked it up, I THOUGHT it said 1987 and I started to post it in the '80s thread. But, then when I looked again I saw 1997 so I posted it here. I just looked it up again and realized that I was looking at something else that was released in 1997.

This is a 1999 song called Pictures by a group called The Boomtang Boys.  I remember when this was popular and it's still quite catchy!
It's funny, this band was so sure of themselves, that their debut album (also released that same year) was called Greatest Hits Volume One.  The album had 12 tracks, so as far as a typical greatest hits album goes, it was 3 hits and 9 new tracks lol

New to me - interesting! I had not realised that this band was still active into the 1990s (perhaps because this particular track might not have been well-known in the States). You're right; this is one of the most overlooked albums out there. Ya learn something new every day! O0

Not many realize it mostly because "In A Big Country" shows up on so many one hit wonder lists and YouTube videos, the average listener may not know that they had 15 UK Top 40 hits over 6 albums between 1983-1993.  They still continue to perform, but have not released an album since 2013

Of course the original frontman Stuart Adamson killed himself in late 2001, but they did eventually replace him. (I'm looking on Wiki right now and I see that they took a hiatus following Adamson's death.)

Neil Young
"War of Man"
1992

I thought of this song because of the California oil spill. Neil wrote this song during the Gulf War in 1991 when Saddam Hussein started dumping thousands of gallons of oil into the Persian Gulf, resulting in a massive oil spill that affected all of the wildlife in the area. The news showed photos of birds and other wild creatures covered in black oil. It was very sad.

1993 Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat) Digable Planets

I remember music class in early 1993. It was 7th grade, and each of the students had to bring in a song to show to the class and discuss it why we chose the song and who performed it. That morning, my brother allowed me to bring in one of his mix tapes or cassette with The Digable Planets Rebirth of Slick. Lol. Because I had forgotten about bringing in a song. Rebirth of Slick was the coolest song on the radio.

During that period I worked with somebody who liked Digable Planets. There used to be discussions whether it was pronounced DIG-able (as in "dig a hole") or DIJ-able (as in "digital").  ;D

I like this song's lyrics simply because Digable Planets is a conscious rap group rather than a gangster rap group.  They rap about what they see on the streets rather than making their music about bitches and hoes.  ::)  >:( I don't like that.

Coming from the days of albums and of 45 records in the 60s and 70s, I never quite got the hang of "cassette singles". I've got a couple by The Rolling Stones from the late 80s because the 'B' sides were rare non-album tracks, but that's about it for me and cassette singles.  :D

I have many cassette singles from the 90s. Buut...45s and 33inch record singles were still popular back then. I have various songs from the 90s in 7inch and 33inch records.
