This is true but I guess they meant when it got really mainstream

If the question is actual Gangsta Rap and not lame early 90s Pop Rap, then it goes to 1993 when songs like "Nothing like a 'G' Thang" and "Regulate" got huge.

I'm not really sure but I'm going with 93. Before 93, there was still something "fun" about hip hop.

Rap was technically first popular in 1979 with Rapper’s Delight, although it was the only popular hip hop song before 1986, but you can tell it grew out from disco. 1986 was when Rap was rapidly growing, starting with Rap Rock, Run DMC’s Walk This Way and It’s tricky, because rock was the main genre still, but it became truly hip hop around 1988 (Golden age of Hip Hop), when rappers like Rob Base, Eazy-E, and Big Daddy Kane were very popular. 1992 was the start of Gangsta Rap’s popularity, ending around 1997, when 2pac died, and the East Coast dominated, and Eminem started becoming popular, but Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg were still popular as well.

With 90's gangsta rap, I think it started booming when Dr. Dre's Chronic album dropped in 1992. But it was also getting big in 1991 with NWA and Public Enemy.
