altough there were some very minor 80s traits as late as 94, however that year is close to 100% 90s so it doesnt really count

I would say 1994. But as someone else mentioned, that year was also like peak '90s.

There was nothing 80s about 1994...I remember, I was there. Matter of fact, I remember there being a lot of 80s backlash during that year.

If we were talking about the Grid neon lines and galaxy background, 1992. But if we were talking about the late 80s hip hop aesthetic, probably 1997 or 98. The Memphis pattern aesthetic died out by 2001.

1993.  That was the real transition year from my own memory.

1990 and 1991 still had that '80s' look, strongly. 1992 was like 40% 80's and 60% 90's. So by 1993, most people looked 90's, if that makes sense.

I feel like the 80s culture was probably done by 91 but the 80s feel probably didnt end until 1993.

I graduated in 1994 in a small town, and we all still had our mullets, acid wash denim, high top sneakers.  The girls still had big hair but not as big as the 80s.

Music artists, in the early 90s there was Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc, but there was still a lot of remnants of 80s hair metal.  Alanis broke out in the USA in 1995 and defined female grunge.  And fall 1994 started Friends and the Rachel hairdo.

So I say 1994 was the last year before the 80s look was gone.

For me, 1997 was the peak year of the 90s, a mixture of a tiny bit of late 80s/early 90s, mid 90s, and Y2K elements.

Really? That doesn't make any sense because many Y2K influences started throughout 1997 even though era hadn't started yet. The Y2K era was not quintessential to the 90's. Y2K era represented the end of the 90's and the beginning of the 00's. 1995 would be the quintessential 90's year. The major pop cultural events throughout 1995 absolutely screams peak 90's, especially for television and movies, and that was the final year before Tupac died too.

Having watched old TV commercials on YouTube it seems like 1993-94 was when the 80s style influences were fully over.

I think it's because the commercials look dated to you. But there was no 80s style influences in 1992 or 1993. And I should know that I was there. I would say 1991 was the year the 80s influences were over.

the reason so many people claim 97 to be the peak year of the 90s is because it had a bit of everything that made up the 90s in it
and the late 90s culture was just as much a part of the 90s as the early and mid 90s stuff was, but of course you wouldnt know because you werent there

It has nothing to do with being there. I was alive throughout the 00's but I wouldn't consider 2007 or 2008 as quintessential 00's years just because it was late 00's culture plus some mid 00's stuff still around. That doesn't make sense. I can still do research. You weren't on these boards when Early 90's Guy used to be here regularly, and man you'd be surprised with his extreme opinions on how 90's culture actually flowed. It sure was nothing like yours that's for sure.  ;)

1993 was probably the first year that seemed more 90s than 80s. 1994 was probably the first predominantly 90s year.

Some vestiges of 80s culture were hanging on strong as late as 1992. Def Leppard released their successful 80s-style album Adrenalize in 1992. And some movies from 1992, like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Encino Man, are essentially just 80s teen comedies.

I would say '91. I felt like '92 was when the grunge movement was starting to kick in. Still had some 80's leftovers but not as much as '91 did.

The post-grunge acts were more 90s. Grunge was a leftover from the 80s.

A lot of this clip from mid 1992 still looks fairly 80s.

Culturally, the 80s influences were over. I think that is where Jessica Ann was coming from. 1991 isn’t remembered for how everyone was still wearing hairstyles and clothing from the 80s.

I think that's a bit of an exaggeration. Plenty of culture that was relevant in the 80s was still relevant in 1992, even if it wasn't the 80s anymore. Hell, even today a lot of culture from the 60s is still relevant.

Some culture that started in the 80s was relevant in 1992. American Gladiators, Tales from the Crypt, and Coach were some popular shows that year. Most people moved on from the 80s in 1992. Generation X was watching edgier movies like Reservoir Dogs, Xennials were dancing to music from the likes of Kris Kross, and Millennials tuned into Ren and Stimpy and Barney the Dinosaur that year.

As you can imagine, Xers missed their youth, so they were listening to singles from the 80s. Xennials were watching repeats of their favorite shows from the late 80s. 1992 is not remembered for either one of those things. The early 90s would not be distinct from the 80s if 80s culture was still relevant in them.

Are we talking about the overall culture? If so, I would go with 1994/95. It wasn't just young people rocking the aesthetic during that time. Older people were as well, especially with fashion and music.

Xennials and late Xers were dressed like they were in the 80s, to a certain degree, until ‘96 or ‘97. You wouldn’t know who was wearing denim jackets and turtlenecks so much from pictures in those years. The different styles that Boomers, Xers, and Xennials first wore in the 80s were falling out of fashion all through the 90s.

New things from the 80s that Boomers, Xers, and Xennials love were being withered out from 1990 onward. They were the 90s. In the 2000s, all of the new culture that Xers, Xennials, and Millennials loved in the 90s weren’t as great as they were in the 1990s.
