Subject: When do you think Y2k culture ends ?

Written By: Si_1997 on 07/18/19 at 9:13 pm

So I was watching one of my fav childhood movies Clockstoppers from 2002, and everything in that movie was very y2k. The fashion, the technology, etc. I feel like 2002 had many y2k elements in that year that 2003 just didn't have. Even that funny song “My neck my back” by kia  released in the summer of 2002 was extremely y2k sounding if you go back and listen to it. Britney Spears released the song “unprotected” in late 2001/early 2002 and it  sounds pretty y2k with the whole guitar sounds that was popular in 1999 songs like “No scrubs” and “Most girls” by pink. Movies like spy kids and spy kids 2 (2001-2002) were sooo y2k imo. I mean I know a lot of us say that 9/11 ended that era but looking back at photos, culture, movies, music etc it seems like y2k culture went from 1998-2002ish.

There would only be one way to tell. We would have to go back in time and compare how we lived in the year 2002 and 2003.

Let’s go back please ! 2019 sucks. I wish there was a way for me to post photos and videos of my childhood on here. I’m new to this site so if you have recommendations I would love it ❤️☺️

Those years were awful for all of us that were not children of the ‘00s. I wasn’t extremely fearful of going outside of my house, but I remember skipping a few movies at the cinemas out of fear of the cinemas possibly being bombed.  :o

2019 seems better to me than the years 2002 and 2003 combined.

You sound like older millennial? Most of my friends were born in 1995-1997 and I highly doubt children under 10 cared or feared about movies being  bomed. I live in CA so it could be different

Believe me, there was a lot of paranoia in all of us in America from end of 2001 to 2008 or so. I’m pretty sure there were quite a few disappointed Zers in 2002 and 2003 because it seemed like you couldn’t go to any highly populated area in the States in those years. Visits to popular tourist sites were a huge no-no.

It ended in 2001. That culture surrounded the year 2000, which Y2K was all about. 2002 and '03 may have had some Y2K elements throughout the years, but it was mainly in fashion and music and some things that started around that time lasted longer. Everything else was the early 00s by then.

My mom and dad were both 23 when they had me so when 2000 rolled around they were about 26. I remember from 2000-2001 my mom wore leather pants or snake skin leather pants with boots all of the time. I still remember the smell. That and CK one was her fav perfume. Little things like that just bring me nostalgia from that time. I have a picture of me at Disneyland in 2000 with sunglasses and a denim bucket hat with a red gap tank top and jean shorts (the ones that are now considered “vintage”). My fav song at the time was “who let the dogs out” by baja men. Ahh childhood memories 😭

The Y2K era hit its peak by November 2000 according to John Titor, but the Y2K era was over by May 2001. However, lots of music videos still had that Y2K aesthetic until Feburary 2003, with songs like Overprotected, Baby Come On Over, Irresistible, etc. Teen Pop was over by February 2001, but there were still some remnants until Mid 2002 with Jessica Simpson, Britney Spears, and NSync. If we talk about TV Shows, there are shows like Jimmy Neutron inspired by Y2K effects, like Jimmy Neutron, Danny Phantom, etc. Which lasted until 2007. Movies like Spy Kids 1, 2, and 3 are also Y2K remnants.

To simply answer your question, the Y2K era started dying in November 2000, and ended in May 2001, but the remnants can go as far as 2003, and the Y2K inspiration lasted until 2007.
