Subject: Items from the 1990s that you still own?

Written By: violet_shy on 02/13/20 at 10:58 pm

Ok I'll begin.

Looking through my storage I've found that I still own:

- Every one of the magazines I read as a teen. They still contain all of the pictures of 90s famous people and bands/singers.

- My baby doll type dress from 1995 that I wore to my 10th grade picture in high school.

- Another dress I wore to my 5th grade picture that was in 1990.

- My original 1994 SNES gaming system with Super Mario brothers games(Super Mario World, Mario Kart, Super Mario All Stars, Donkey Kong 1-3).

- An original K-Mart holiday bear that has "1994" stitched onto it.

- VHS tapes that have music videos from 95 to 97.

- Cassette and CD music singles.

I still have my air max 97’s from 1997. They are baby sized because I was a baby  ;D.

I have my cabbage patch doll from 1998. I named her Dolly.

Wow where to begin... I actually still have stuff from the 80s too. But from the 90s...
Many of my clothes from high school that I can still wear. Including my leather coat I got at fashion bug which is still my favorite.
My tapes and cds I accumulated. My vhs tapes. My first cd changer.
My bass guitars and amps and all the gear I got when I played in bands in the 90s.
Drawings I did back then. Letters from people I met in chat rooms in the 90s.
All the paperwork from when I bought my first house in 99. That sure came in handy when I sold it in 2016 because nobody else had record of that stuff.
Spelling bee and school awards. College books and degree and a box of stuff I used in engineering class.
My first computer, a Tandy 386sx/33.
My satellite dish and gear that came with the old house and I now use here.
90s stuff I own but got later on...
My Jeep and my geo tracker
My mower and snowblower
Probably tons more

That's a lot of 90s items :o.

I think I use to have the same computer! But I'll have to search online to see.

I pre-date the 90s, but I've got all the music magazines I bought in the 70s. Some of the long-forgotten ones are among the best. There was a great one called "Words & Music" that only lasted from about 1971-1973. Not only great articles, but several pages of sheet music of then-current songs! This was at all newsstands for $1 or so. There were two called "Zoo World" and "Rock" that were like mini-Rolling Stone magazines in that they came in a fold over newspaper format bi-weekly. These were about 35 cents each and always had interesting articles. I've got all the albums I bought from the 60s to today. I can't conceive of getting rid of them. In the mid-80s people jumped on the bandwagon of those new-fangled CDs (themselves now defunct) and dumped all their albums. I knew they would be sorry one day and now they are. Everybody who dumped their albums wishes they had them back. Things like records are eternal items and should not be gotten rid of the minute some new and often short-lived technology comes along.

I have a picture of it buried away on my computer at home.  I'll post it when I find it.
Let's see, what else...
Sheet music books.  Bass player magazines.
Furniture I built in shop class in the 90s.  My oak speaker stands in my living room.  An oak stand for my bass.
A stereo which I am now using in the garage.
Lots of car parts which I got from junkyards back then.  Lately some of them have come in handy because that stuff is hard to find now.
Some of my lego sets came from the 90s.  I still have all my Legos, but haven't taken them out since my daughter and I used to play with them.
Many of the things I bought when I moved into my first house in 99.  Dishes, utensils, trash cans, towels.  One trash can still has the Family Dollar sticker on it, even though the store no longer exists.  My microwave still works great but doesn't match my new kitchen so I keep it in the basement as a spare.
Keys and owners manuals from cars I no longer have.
Tools, and a solder gun I got in high school that still works.  One of the most useful Christmas presents I ever got.

It may sound like I am a hoarder but I am not.  I lived with one for awhile though.

CD's
N64 games and the no longer working N64 (even though I bought it in 2000 it's still technically a 90's item)
PS1 games (even though I rebought them from Ebay)
I might still have some clothes from back then

Wow those are pretty much vintage magazines. I've seen the records but never buy them since I don't know much about 70s music. Only a few songs that my mom use to listen to.

I use to to have an original N64. Don't know what happened to it. I think it was given away. Lucky you though!

In those days, these publications were pretty much the ONLY source of information for what rock stars were up to. There was some info on the radio, but not much. And the magazines came out quite a while after whatever they were reporting. There was no instantaneous information. So it all had an air of mystery which only enhanced it's meaning and significance. Rock stars were like gods from Mount Olympus. Once and a while the clouds parted and we got a glimpse of what they were up to. Nowadays you practically see famous people wiping their butts on Twitter and Facebook. No mystique whatsoever.

As soon as the Internet blew up and became cheap as the '90s gave way to the 21st century, the mystique died pretty quickly. A lot of what would be "has been" stars are still prevalent with small but loyal fanbases. Let's not forget especially in the earlier '90s fan clubs where info would be sent via mail. There also weren't as many books published on the subject of rock (and miniscule for hip-hop), and the only serious ones focused on the major stars of the 1950s, 60s, and early '70s. Entertainment Tonight and a few other shows like CNN's Showbiz Today or the E! channel (pre-True Hollywood Story) also gave some of those glimpses.

Of course, I've still got countless items, from pogs to SNES games to TMNT figures to VHS to some magazines, so many books to count, board games, PC games and manuals, some comics, baseball cards, a few travel brochures, and even a 1996 RCA Tube TV that I occasionally still use to play old NES/SNES/PS1 games. This decade has had an enormous survival rate compared to others due to the good economy generally speaking since then as well as larger homes, fewer moves, and more sentimental items like family photo albums. By contrast, I didn't see too much stuff from the '60s and '70s in the '90s except for a few photo albums and a few collector's plates and Precious Moments figurines at my late grandpa's house, since Boomers tended to be more progressive with keeping up with trends, although my mom and dad's LP collection from those decades still survives today. Of course, I've got tons of pre-'90s stuff that I purchased at a later date, but I still have my 1986 Talking Big Bird as well as some Sesame Street and other kids books from that era since I was just a tot. There's just so much stuff that sometimes its hard to realize how long ago the 1990s were at times.

Yes, let's not forget the paper fanzine. The 80s especially were the golden age of the fanzine. There would be ads in the back of Goldmine and other such collector's magazines and one could subscribe and even contribute to these zines. They were generally a labor of love, put together by serious fans who rarely made any money from them, as making money wasn't really the point.

I have been purging a lot of things. Since moving 6 years ago, I try to have a yard sale every year and I have been getting rid of a bunch of crap stuff. This stuff dates from pre-1900-2020. We used to be in the business of buying junk & selling antiques. We would go to auctions and buy a bunch a crap stuff to sell. We had the buying part down but the selling...not so much. Now, I pretty much sell a lot of it at yard sales. I am so happy that I have less crap stuff than I did this time last year and I hope to have even less this time NEXT year. Not only have I been getting rid of the crap stuff that we bought to sell, I have also been getting rid of my own crap stuff that I have accumulated over the years. But there are some things that I just can't part with.

I still have my vinyl that I bought from the '70s on. I was too young to buy any in the '60s but I did inherit a bunch from sibs who no longer wanted them. For about a year, (1989-90), I was without a stereo. I had a little boombox that had a double cassette player. So, I bought a lot of cassettes at the time. I still have them. Don't know if I still have that player or if I sold it at my last yard sale. After that, I finally bought a stereo-complete with a CD player (along with a double cassette player & turn table.)  I started buying CDs. When we moved, I never did hook up the stereo. I put it out at the last yard sale but right now, it is on Craigslist. I mainly use a boombox to play my CDs-and I am still buying them. I can also play my cassettes on it, too. I do have a turntable that I can hook up to the computer but I just haven't done that, yet.

As for other things that I have, I did sell a bunch of the VHS tapes and VHS player but I had but I still have a bunch left. I also have the first Nintendo console and some games and N64 and games. Both are not hooked up. Clothes, furniture, kitchen items, etc. Our back room looks like a computer graveyard. We haven't gotten rid of any of them-YET!

I'm sure there is a lot more crap stuff.

Kind of. I actually got mine in the 90's (namely, in 1991 for my birthday) and it still works like a charm.

I also have one or two audiocassettes from the 1990s. (And a few Weird Al CDs.)

A lot of it I still use so I don't consider it in storage.  Other than that, I have some boxes in the basement and some plastic bins in the pole barn garage.  Nothing that interferes with living space.

BTW here is my first computer, as it was back then.  I kept the "tower" for old times sake.  I still use the power switch box with my latest computer.  And I did save my drawer of disks, which started with the box of discs on the table.  Oh and I still use that computer desk.

I have my VHS tapes (many of them rare) in plastic bins. I stacked two and stacked another two and pushed them together. Covered them with a beautiful Indian table cloth and put a vase of flowers on top. It doubles as a decorative table!  :)

I bought a Turbo Grafx-16 game console in the early 90s, and throughout the 90s, I bought many games for it, most of which I still own.
I am glad I hung on to it, because anyone who is a gamer may know that Turbo Grafx-16 stuff is rare and now can be worth big bucks!

Our dining table and matching coffee table and side table. The stereo cabinet and the CD player - though the turntable, amp and speakers are probably from the eighties.

The display cabinet and many of the ornaments in the family room.  The 'best' dinner service, and a lot of stuff in the kitchen.

I also have some clothes, I can think of a skirt, a couple of sweatshirts and probably my X-files t-shirt.

I have a dresser full of vhs tapes in the basement. And several vcrs because I still love to watch them. On my 27 inch crt tv.  If a tape gets stuck I just pop it apart and remove it. At worst I’ve swapped tape guts into a different case. One thing I’ve noticed over the years is Emerson brand vcrs. They never seem to go bad and seem to last forever. Could be just my luck of the draw but it makes me wonder.

There’s something about experiencing a piece of history using original technology. Just like how people love records with the imperfect clicks and pops. Watching a movie from my younger years all remastered in hd on a large screen just doesn’t seem right. Kinda messes with my head. Ok it really does. I much prefer watching it using the technology of the time. It’s a great time to collect this stuff because it’s next to nothing at resales. One local resale has an entire room full of tapes for like a dime each. Same with music and why I’ve been building my collection. Eventually it’s going to not be profitable anymore and it’s going to end up in the landfill and be gone forever.

I still the first DVD I brought in the late 1990s, "A Clockwork Orange". It was released after the death of Stanley Kubrick in 1999, and this film due to controversial manner has not been circulation in the cinemas since it's origin release back in 1971, Kubrick had totally withdrew for distribution.

I still have these two VHS tapes that I got as presents. They're two of my favorite childhood movies.

Amazing. O0 I also have several VHS tapes that were made in the 1990s (as well as some from the 1980s).

I don't know if you would call it an item but I still have my graduation cap from 1992 hanging in my small closet and this was 28 years ago.

It IS an item.

I have my Nintendo 64 from 1997 here in my apartment. My friends and I still play it whenever they come over. Most of my childhood things that still survive are at my parents’ house (much to their chagrin.) The Sega Genesis that my brother got for Christmas in 1993 is in the basement there along with the games for it and some additional N64 games that I didn’t bring with me when I moved out. There’s a decent amount of old toys in storage there as well including some Lego sets from the ‘90s, some Mario character plushies that came from Nintendo Power magazine, vintage Woody and Buzz toys from when the OG Toy Story came out. My brother has a huge bin of Marvel and Batman action figures from the ‘90s that my nephews love to play with whenever they go over there. That’s all I can think of off the top of my head but there may be more.

The Batman and Robin soundtrack

The Omega Virus talking board game

Ace of Base's "The Bridge" album

90s Barbies

Pokémon toys

Rocko doll

CatDog doll

Ren doll

Daggett doll

Blue doll (or was that an early 2000s one?)

Mumfie elephant doll

I believe my Marvin the Martian doll was from the 90s, because I got it at the Warner Bros. Studio Store in 2000

Most Pokèmon toys (150 monsters) were out in the early 2000s. I don’t understand why there isn’t discussion about Pokèmon and anime in general in the 2000s section of this forum. The Pokèmon series was only around for one year of the 1990s (1998). Pokèmon was a huge holdover from the 90s in the early 2000s.

I’m not entirely sure, but I think the any Batman figures he had were early ‘90s, so probably based off the two Tim Burton Batman movies as well as Batman: The Animated Series. When I was last over there on Christmas and my nephews were playing with them he mentioned that he got the Bat Mobile as “a gift from the new baby” (me) when I was born in 1990. I want to say he got more into Spider-Man and X-Men around the mid ‘90s so that’s when the Marvel figures would date from, but he was into Batman first. Still, I definitely remember us watching Batman: The Animated Series when I was little. It might have been airing in syndication slightly after its original run at this point.

The Kenner The Dark Knight Collection Batmobile was the biggest update from the 1989 Toy Biz Batmobile. Not to mention, The Dark Knight Collection Batcave was one huge improvement over the Toy Biz Batcave. I like both the Kenner and Toy Biz Batman set, but The Dark Knight Collection does not get enough love from collectors. I think that could be because of all of the Batman variant action figures. Toy Biz, at least, gave us Bob the Goon in 1989. The only two figures Kenner gave us with The Dark Knight Collection was Batman and The Joker. The Kenner Knock-Out Joker is the rarest action figure out of both sets nonetheless.

I did not care for many things Batman: The Animated Series. Huge missed opportunity for the animated series to be more like the movies.
