Subject: LEGO in the ‘90s

Written By: MarkMc1990 on 03/02/20 at 12:13 am

Here are some of my favorite LEGO sets from the 1990s.

While my brother who was three and a half years older got really into them and had exposed me to LEGO before, the first Lego product I personally owned was this royal king on his horse minifig. I got it in my Easter basket when I was 5 in 1996:

This was the first full set I ever owned:

I got it for my 6th birthday in 1996. Part of the Aquasharks theme (which itself was a subset of the Aquazone theme) this small model was called the Spy Shark and that minifigure’s name was Thresher. One of his hands was a translucent neon green hook. I picked it out it out at the store because I loved the colors in it, particularly the translucent orange shark cockpit window.

I got this one for my 8th birthday in 1998:

Witch’s Magic Manor. This was the second largest set from the 1997 Fright Nights theme, after the Night Lord’s Castle which happens to be the tallest LEGO castle. I loved the witch minifig and dragon.

My brother had this one from a similar theme called the Dragon Masters:

Majisto’s Tower. My favorite piece in this one was the spiral staircase inside. Something cool about this set was that the box it came in had a castle design on the back that had perforated doors and windows.

Other standouts we had in the 90s:

My LEGO obsession carried into 2000 and 2001, but for purposes of this thread I only posted ones from the 90s.

Miss the old LEGO logo. Those were the days.

I had Lego Racers and some of the earlier Lego Star Wars (I had to buy Lego Racers on eBay as this was like '03, but they still sold some early Lego Star Wars stuff at the stores I went to when I was a kid.)

Early LEGO Star Wars is 2000s and belongs in the 2000s section of this forum.

All the LEGO sets I have were new in the 1980s; I acquired my last one in late '89 for Christmas. And I played with them regularly in the early 90's (my preteen years).

LEGO made a big comeback in the 1980s during the 60s revival.

Same here. I got a few in the early 90s including the technic test car but I looked it up and found it was from 1988.

There were so many late 80s toys still in stores in the early 90s, but some of the best late 80s toys were sold out after the spring of 1990 or mid 1991 (at the latest).

I miss the classic LEGO Maniac commercials (late '80s-early '90s) as well as the LEGO Mania commercials (mid-90s) and the A Lot For You commercials (late '90s). My fondest memories were constructing a suburban-style rancher without using a template of a classic design. But LEGO keeps at it more than ever despite the presence of smartphones and video games.

Did you ever build other objects with your LEGOS?

As they should... because young'uns need to have a true hands-on experience when it comes to building things.

Alphas aren’t having their parents buy LEGOS like late Millennials and Zers did in the 2000s.

Actually, LEGO Star Wars started in 1999.

Anyway, I don't know much about the 90s LEGO sets, but I do know that in one of Neil Cicierega's videos that's a total 90s flashback (Aaron), he has a bucket of LEGOs.
