Subject: When did it become the norm to wear your shirts untucked?

Written By: GameXcaper on 12/08/20 at 1:18 am

Looking back at every decade before the 2000s, it was common for men to tuck in their shirts, t-shirts, or any top garment into their pants. But in the 2000s pretty much every guy wore their shirts untucked. This means that the change happened somewhere in the 90s. When did you start noticing it? I know that dress shirts are still worn tucked in, but not T-shirts or tank tops. I'm assuming for different age groups it came at different times.

I would guess the early 1990s. Tucking your shirt in was considered an "old people thing" by the late 1990s, speaking from personal experience.  I drove my parents up the wall for refusing to tuck my shirt in at the tailor's  ;D :-X

Early 90s is about right. At the time it went from tight clothes being the norm to the loose, baggy fashions of the early 90s (grunge, rap and Michael Jordan influenced) shirts became untucked. During the tight clothes era of the 70s and 80s the norm was to have the shirt tucked in and have as streamlined a look as possible Bagging or ballooning of the tucked in shirt was a no-no. Trust me, I spent years during that time trying to keep my shirt as tucked in and as taut as possible. It's not as easy as you think. Here's a bit of trivia. During the making of the "Saturday Night Fever" movie, shirts were specially made for Joh Travolta with a snap-in crotch so they would stay tucked in and tight during the dance scenes.

I tuck in my shirt sometimes so that way I don't look like a slob.

I never tuck in my shirt unless it’s some special occasion. Too uncomfortable and restrictive and just not my thing. One of those things my mom made me do so now I’m like nope.

Early 1980s.

Early 1980s.

Incorrect. The tucked in shirt, tight pants look went on throughout the 80s. Take it from me. I spent most of the 80s trying to keep my shirt way tucked in, as per the norm of the time. Of course, parallel  to this was the "half shirt" for men (which we have covered in detail in another thread) which would render the tucking in of shirts moot, but it was, of course, not for every occasion.

I'm not overweight by any means but my tummy sticking out is the reason I avoid it despite it being fashionable nowadays. If I do tuck my sweater or t-shirt shirt in I usually wear a denim jacket or some other layer on top.

Did you just say the word "tummy"? :o  Only joking with you, but it seems funny from a grown person.  ;)

I do notice that people invariably talk to their pets like they are babies or small children, no matter the age of the pet. I think it would be interesting if people spoke to pets like they were grown people, i.e. "Do you know what happened to Me today at work, Rover? My boss is such a..."  I know the animal won't understand most of it, but animals understand only a limited amount of words anyway, so it's basically the same as talking to them in condescending baby talk like "who's my widdle baby, who, who?". The pet would still feel like they have attention and it would be therapeutic for the person as well. A win win situation! And who knows, the animal just might come up with a helpful solution for your difficult boss.  ;)

Reading all of this makes me think I may be a trend setter. I spent 8 years in Catholic school, graduating 8th grade in 1976.
The only time I kept my shirt tucked was when I was in school, as soon as I left school I untucked the shirt. T-shirts, flannel
shirts or whatever shirts, I hated my shirt tucked in.

I have a big tummy and sometimes I like to keep them untucked when I'm in the mood.

So we should all say "stomach" or what about "belly"? ???

But if it's too complicated they might not understand?  ???

The only time I can wear my shirts untucked is when I'm at home but when there's a certain occasion or get together I keep them tucked in nice and neat.

I have a pair of these for the three or four times a non-pandemic year when I need to tuck my shirt in.

Slow, that look reminds me of when women get sexy and they start wearing those stocking garter belts that have those attached straps.

There is a version that attaches to your socks instead of your thighs. I'll spare you the photos.

Haha, it's for when you bend, sit down or stretch and your shirt untucks or looks loose. I get girls giggling every time I tuck my shirt in, so I bought it to save myself the embarrassment. I don't want to be the next Rudy Giuliani  :-[

I had a couple of denim shirts (as in the first picture) except with embroidery and (probably faux) mother of pearl snaps. Too cool! These I wore untucked. But it is important to note the nuance of the times. These were shirts specially set aside to wear untucked as opposed to the norm, which was tucked. I has a "knit rib" shirt or two also worn untucked.

When I saw it in the mall, the slogan was “go untuck yourself”. Let your mind do the rest.
