I can't help but notice a huge shift that occurred in the year 1997 in terms of mainstream music.

Hm. I think late 1998 was the year when mainstream music really changed and sounded a lot more late 90s style.

There was a lot of hip hop, especially gangsta rap, dominating the charts that year, with performers such as the late Notorious BIG (who'd gotten killed early in the year), P Diddy, among others. It wasn't my cup of tea, though. :P

I noticed the shift even at the time, hip hop became all shiny suit and '80s sampling, electronicia was hyped as the next big thing, and it was Marylin Manson's breakthrough year. It was an eclectic mix of all kinds of stuff happening during that year, ska punk, trip hop, big beat techno, post grunge, glam rap, eurodance, R&B, ect.

I think so, but 1997 was the year of big changes in my life (graduating high school and enlisting in the Navy) so my perception of the music/culture could have changed.

To me this was probably the biggest music change of 1997.

Even at the time, I noticed a change in pop culture. I'd say it was 70% Y2K, 30% classic 90s.

Y2K culture didn’t peak until the 1998-1999 school year when Britney Spears rose to mega-star success with “Hit Me Baby One More Time”.
