Subject: Biggest shift of the 90s?

Written By: NightmareFarm on 08/06/22 at 2:48 pm

For those who remember most of the 90s, what year was the biggest shift?

I'm guessing 1995-1996

The biggest political shift of the 1990s was in November 9th 1989 with the fall of the Berlin Wall as the Cold War began to thaw across Eastern Europe, the spokesman for East Berlin's Communist Party announced a change in his city's relations with the West. Starting at midnight that day, he said, citizens of the GDR were free to cross the country's borders.

Isn't that a shift of the 80s though?

So would you consider that the 80s to 90s transition?

Its (the Berlin Wall) fall on November 9, 1989, paved the way for the reunification of Germany on October 3rd 1990, and the liberation of Central and Eastern European countries previously bound under the Warsaw Pact defense alliance with the Soviet Union.

Is an 80s to 90s transition different than an 80s to 90s shift?  In other words, if the fall of the Berlin Wall had happened in 1991 it would have been a 91-92 shift but not transition, but since it happened in 1989 it's an 89-90 transition rather than shift? This is a lot to take in.

I just use them interchangeably.

Did you notice any other shifts that were in the 90s?

They are not the same thing. A transition is more of a natural change (and slower, with overlap) where a shift is something more cataclysmic and sudden, often brought on by specific event or events. . You didn't know that?

I thought 1989 was the shift from 80's to early 90's, but I think within the 90's it's 1993 from the early to the core/mid 90's culture. 1997 was a big shift as well from the mid/core to Y2K.

Absolutely. "Shifts", a made up thing, are nothing but people's subjective opinions. They are not measurable.

No Reverse gear?

Shift pattern means the combination of days worked and days off. Sickness means sickness and non-compensable accidents. Steward means an employee, within the Employer's service, elected or appointed by the Union or its members to represent the Union and its members. Transfer means a move from one position to another position with the same salary.

I'm trying not to be obsessed with 'shifts' but Nirvana coming onto the scene in the autumn of 1991 was a huge change in the music scene. Also the cold war officially came to an end by late 1991 or something.

Weird Al poking fun at Nirvana.  ;D ;D ;D

What is this song all about?
Can't figure any lyrics out
How do the words to it go
I wish you'd tell me, I don't know
Don't know, don't know, don't know, oh no
Don't know, don't know, don't know
Now I'm mumblin', and I'm screamin'
And I don't know what I'm singin'
Crank the volume, ears are bleedin'
I still don't know what I'm singin'
We're so loud and incoherent
Boy, this oughta bug your parents

Bill Clinton was liked by some Republicans. It helps that he's a charismatic and compromising guy. It was nice to see less partisanship during this era. But then you turn on Rush Limbaugh on AM radio then you're like, "There it is."

It also helped that the internet didn't become explosively popular until like 1996 or something.

That was the previous generations' 2008, especially with the young Gen-X voters who were the age back then of Millennial voters in 2008.

I don't really remember it but I know the biggest shift was in 1998. This was one of the big shifts in history on the same playing field as 2008 and 2020.
