Subject: Bronze Steve Ovett statue stolen

Written By: Philip Eno on 09/05/07 at 4:02 am

A life-size statue of Olympic champion Steve Ovett has been stolen from a Sussex city.

The bronze sculpture of the middle distance runner was taken from its plinth in Preston Park, Brighton, on Saturday or Sunday.

A council employee reported the statue missing on Monday, having last seen it on Friday.

Police said it had been cut off at the ankles and appealed for anyone with information to contact them.

Steve Ovett was born in Brighton in 1955. He dominated middle-distance running along with rival Sebastian Coe in the late 70s and early 80s.

He set six world records and won gold and bronze medals at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow.
