Subject: Oldest man in Tokyo died 30 years ago

Written By: Philip Eno on 07/30/10 at 5:16 pm

A man reported to be 111 and the oldest man in Tokyo died 30 years ago.

Sogen Kato, born in 1899, was found mummified in his home by police, reports The Daily Telegraph.

His granddaughter told investigators that, 30 years ago, Kato declared he wanted to be a living Buddha. Police estimate he died soon after.

Kato's family are under suspicion on the basis that they received pension money of the man and his dead wife.

Tokyo metropolitan welfare official Yutaka Muroi said: "His family must have known he has been dead all these years and acted as if nothing happened. It's so eerie."

This happens now and again.  They'll find a mummified corpse under a blanket where it had been for ten years, or they'll find a mummified corpse "sitting in his favorite chair"!  Sometimes it's hard to say goodbye!
