Subject: Motorist admits driving at 172mph

Written By: Philip Eno on 08/24/07 at 4:34 pm

From BBC News Online:

A motorist has admitted driving at a speed of 172mph on a road in Oxfordshire with a 70mph speed limit.
Timothy Brady was driving a Porsche 911 along the A420 near Kingston Bagpuize when he was caught in a routine speed check, Oxford Crown Court heard.

Brady, 33, of Harrow in north-west London, will be sentenced in September.

The speed is thought to be the highest recorded in the UK for such an offence. Road safety charity Brake described the case as "shocking".

Wow, 102 MPH over... that's going to be one hell of a fine!

"The chances that a person will be able to control a vehicle at that speed if something unexpected happens is slim."

Race car drivers do it all the time. And it was a Porsche 911...

He has a point though. I've done 155 on a motorcycle, once. Had anything gone wrong I would have been road pizza. Still, it was fun, scary, and definitely... dumb.  :P

n00b.  Done before.

OK, so that guy only got it up to around 120 mph.  But he did it 30 years ago in a '74-76 Mercedes 450SEL 6.9.  And he did it in downtown freaking Paris.  And he got away with it.  Hey, he had a date.

A little Googling will find you a 100 megabyte .AVI of the 1976 Claude Lelouch film.  8 minutes later, you'll be buying the DVD from the official site anyway, because you'll agree that even though it's only 8 minutes long, it's the coolest 8 minutes that's ever been recorded to film.
