Subject: Home delivery snares Glasgow pizza robber

Written By: Philip Eno on 11/09/10 at 12:54 pm

A man who robbed a takeaway driver of pizzas, cash and his mobile phone was caught after his mother let the victim into their house to call the police.

Charles McManus, 30, admitted robbing Muhammad Zar in Springburn, Glasgow, on 19 February this year.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard how McManus was stunned on returning home to find Mr Zar in his front room.

Sheriff Andrew Normand deferred sentence for reports and McManus was released on bail.

The court heard how Mr Zar was making a delivery for Domino's Pizza at about 2200 GMT when he was approached by McManus and another man.

McManus brandished a knife and demanded the food that he had, his mobile phone and some money he had made from tips.

The court heard that the other man, who is still unknown, also stole Mr Zar's car keys and car, leaving him stranded.

McManus then told his victim to walk to the end of the road and turn right but Mr Zar thought that it might be another trap and turned left instead.

He went to the first available lit window he could see, which turned out to be McManus's own home where he lived with his mother and brother.

Mr Zar explained what had happened and asked if he could use their landline phone to call the police.

He was on the phone to the operator when McManus came into the house.

McManus ran off when the victim recognised him but was caught when he returned home later at the same time the police arrived.

He initially told officers that he had been away elsewhere all night but later admitted during his police interview that he was involved in the robbery.
