Subject: 3 million bees seized from Queens, N.Y., man's home

Written By: warped on 08/25/12 at 7:51 am

Approximately 3 million bees were found swarming around a man's Queens, N.Y., home on Wednesday night, and were confiscated --  to the relief of his neighbors.

Yi Gin Chen had beehives packed into the backyard -- about 45 hives in total, said Andrew Cote, president of the New York City Beekeepers Association. Cote said Chen, a beekeeper in his native China, had contacted the beekeepers' association earlier in the month for help with the bees because he was trying to sell his Corona, Queens, home.

Chen allegedly started with one hive a couple years ago, and the insects kept multiplying. Cote said Chen's real estate agent contacted him a few weeks ago and told him that Chen, who only speaks Mandarin, had "four or five hives" that he wanted to sell.

When Cote arrived at the home, he was shocked to find it was actually 45.

If he owned 2 canary's, could have been a story about the birds and the bees.

Not really.  Urban beekeeping in the cities has been a growing trend over the past 4-5 years.

45 hives in a backyard is pushing the limits of sanity, but a few hives on the top of a building is a good idea.  Bees are neat.  Keeping a hive has been described as having a Borg cube for a pet.  As long as you're careful about not annoying it too much, the bees do all the work, and you get to be part of a new and exciting episode every week.

My retired father keeps himself busy keeping bees.  One of his hobbies.  Out in the country your biggest hazard is bears.  My housemate set up beehives this spring.  I assumed she knew what she was doing, so I let her project bee.  A week later the bears trashed the hives and all the bees escaped into the swamp.  Oh well!

I will revise to read: this particular beekeeper is an idiot.

He should grow them on some deserted island...away from the population.
Here are 3 other honey bees that can join them.

The bees are too crunchy, but how about seizing a pound of honey from the White House's hive on the south lawn (this here's a thread about urban beekeeping), and liberes cervisia!
