Subject: Girls develop urine-powered generator

Written By: warped on 11/26/12 at 7:38 pm

LAGOS, Nigeria, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Four girls at a Nigerian school have developed an electricity generator powered by urine in response to the country's energy problems.

The girls, students at the Doregos Private Academy School in Lagos, said they developed the urine-powered generator due to the difficulty in finding fuel to power the generators many people in the country rely on due to the country's frequent outages, Radio France Internationale reported Monday.

"We noticed that many Nigerians, businesses depend on a power supply have virtually been put out of business because of the high cost of power, so we decided to make a device that will reduce this problem. We noticed that waste products can be used to generate energy that is why we decided to experiment on urine," said Eniola Bello, one of the students.

The girls said the generator is powered by the hydrogen and oxygen released by the urine.

Adebola Duro-Aina, another student on the team, said about 1 1/2 gallons of urine can power the generator for about 36 hours.

"This urine is being electrolyzed, releasing hydrogen and oxygen gas, and this then goes into our gas tank. Our gas tank here stores the gases, and anytime we need the gas we can open up the gas tank and release the gas and our generator is powered," she said.

And BPAmocoExxonMobilConocoPhillips hasn't killed them this yet?  :o :o :o

Now is this an internal combustion type engine or is it more like a fuel cell? Just think if this could be converted to an automotive application...

If R Kelly had a urine-powered car, he'd easily win the 24 Hours of LeMans.  :o

I hate to be Debbie Downer here, but it looks like it's bogus.  Much like everything else that passes for Nigerian economics, it's a fraud, unless you can find someone who belives in perpetual motion machines.

If the pictures are accurate, they hooked a car battery up to a bucket of piss, and while that'll split H2O into 2 H2 and 1 O2, it won't do so unless you can recharge the battery for free.  If you have enough electricity to keep the battery charged (in order to keep electrolyzing your urea-loaded water), you don't need a generator.  Even if your electricity is "free" in the form of batteries recharged by solar cells, why not just your solar cells to generate the electricity to charge your battery bank, and then use the batteries to power your washing machines and automobiles directly?  Even with "free" solar power, this thing would merely waste energy electrolyzing pisswater into hydrogen and oxygen, only to waste further energy to run a compressor (not shown) to cram the hydrogen and oxygen into the tanks (only one shown), then waste more energy by burning (not shown) the hydrogen and oxygen to heat water in a boiler (not present) which can, after you waste another huge amount of energy, be turned to steam to turn a turbine to... wait.  Goodness, that sounds familiar.  We covered this earlier tonight!

"A generator is a machine that contains a powerful magnet that creates a magnetic field.  When wires are rotated rapidly through this field, there's a current of electricity produced.  Now if only we had a superhero who could stand here and turn the generator real fast, we wouldn't need to electrolyze so much piss to make electricity, electricity..."
