A troop of opportunistic baboons have been caught red-handed looting from a South African home, and it's not the first time.

The hairy burglars managed to scale the brick walls of the Cape Town property and let themselves in through a third-story window, the Daily Mail reported.

Stunned neighbours and passersby watched in disbelief as the cheeky monkeys made off with various linens and a stuffed teddy bear, after raiding the fridge and trashing the kitchen.

French photographer Cyril Ruoso couldn't believe his eyes as he watched the daylight heist unfold.

"At the beginning, only one of the baboons was inside the flat," he said.

"He opened the wide front windows to the flat with his mouth, and around ten baboons then came into the flat."

Mr Ruoso said if that was not surprising enough, the monkeys' reaction to the homeowner's beloved stuffed toy was.

"The baboons played with the teddy bear like a kid plays with a doll," he said.

"They even groomed it like a monkey!"

Monkey raids are common in South Africa, where teams of people are employed to keep the primates at bay.
