Subject: Should we designate someone to greet new members

Should we send them an email or private message when they create an account? A form letter or something perhaps (what should it contain?). Is that tacky?

An automatic welcome e-mail when they join the site sounds good. From what I remember, we always welcomed new members. At least I know I have. It's always nice to see new names and personalities.

I think that this is a great idea, Chucky.  I wouldn't mind helping newbies out.   ;D

There should definitely be a welcome e-mail, Chucky.  It should include a greeting from you as our fearless leader and supreme ruler, and Hairspray as moderator; and also some things new members may want to know right away, such as:

-introducing yourself in the Playful Penguin Place (or whatever it's being called at that time)

-how to hide/include your e-mail address in the members list

-how to edit a personal profile

-what is a PM and how to read/send them (I could probably handle writing that section for ya! ;))

You might even consider asking for a few volunteers who wouldn't mind helping out new people and who know the system here well; and you could include their names in the letter as people who can help answer questions.

Just my thoughts...

Another thing that might be good would be a kinder, gentler (shorter) version of the post you made telling us to chill over the "old crowd" post.

Something along the lines of  what type of post to put in what section etc.

I'm glad we actually *do* have different sections for different types of posts.  I just deleted myself from another (non-80's related) board because the moderator was a bit too rabid about "no off-topic posts".  Each post literally had to mention what the board was about, and nothing else or it was deleted.

(Example: if the topic was about music, we could not post about musicians acting in a movie. That was considered "off-topic")

On the other extreme, another board I go to routinely goes off-topic, the only rule being "as long as everyone else is ok with the discusson, who cares what the topic is. (It's a book discussion board.  We haven't posted anything about the book itself since, ohhh August?)

I try not to be that uptight about staying on topic.. of course when the topic is an entire decade it's pretty hard to stray in my opinion..

I do have a help file I started to write, but it's pretty long, and was meant to be a more comprehensive overview of the site. I got tired of writing it though and never finished it.

Is there any way some of us could help you with this?  A lot of us know the site pretty well, and maybe we could get the bulk of it together and you could just tweak it?  It seems like it would be a valuable thing to have up and running.
