Subject: I seek the wisdom of one from "Down Under"!

Written By: XenaKat13 on 05/02/02 at 09:11 p.m.

In another forum I go to occasionally, the subject of "urban legends" came up.

One person mentioned that she likes to put beets on her burgers.  Yes, you read that right.  Beets.  Those red things that stain if you drop them on anything.

She also said that she was from Australia, and that such things were common there.

Now, I've always been open to new ideas when it comes to food, but I'm not one of those "extreme" adventurers.

Are beets common additives to burgers?  Like lettuce, tomatoes, or onions?  Or was this person pulling everyone's legs?

If it's true, how is it prepared?  Raw? Cooked? Pickled?  Chopped, sliced, mixed in with the beef, what?

If I have just fallen for a practical joke, join me in laughing at myself!  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

Reminds me of the Burger King commercial where different people are telling the CEO what the put in their Whoppers, and the one woman says, "One word! Beets!" LOL!

Actually we put beetROOT on our hamburgers. We take a couple of slices out of a tin, and slap them on with everything else. We also use bacon, egg, pineapple, tomato, lettuce, cheese and onion.

Australian hamburgers rule!

;D

Agree with the Goreripper here !  Beets are out - Beetroot is in.

And I'm not going into the difference between and egg and a beetroot or the moderators will be after me...

There are burgers we take away stuff from however.  The Macca's ones, where like everyone else in the alpha quadrant we take the green thing off.... ;)

*teehee*, he said ROOT!  ;)

Enquiring minds want to know...  could you PM the "difference between and egg and a beetroot" thing, please?

And what do you do with the green thing?  ::)

I think I'm going to like Australia...  ;D

Throw it away! Pickle on hamburgers should be a hanging offense.

Well, since it (beetroot) comes so highly recommended, I will try it next time I have burgers at home. ;)

Which should be soon, the stores have been running specials on ground beef for  Cino de Mayo.

I'm with you guys.  That funny looking green thing does not belong on the burger.  :-X They hate to see me at McD's.  I insist they make one up special without it.

Not only is the pickle essential, but so is a nice, thick slice of onion (vidalia) and half a dozen slices of jalepeno peppers. Skip the tomato though.

I thought beetroot *is* what we call beets  ???
Anyway, it's pickled and sliced. Then it fits in a burger nicely.

Phew, for a minute there I thought I had to come in the defense of the pickle. Lester truly knows about ingredients!

Now, now.  I have no problem with pickles on the side.  Real pickles, that is.  Large, spear-shaped and properly sour.  Or the commonly-called bread-and-butter slices are good too.  I'll even put those on my burger.

But whatever it is they use at those fast-food places is NOT a pickle.  Yes, it's green, but it just doesn't taste right. And they are too soggy.  Pickles should CRUNCH!

**As an interesting side note, when I worked at a McDonald's and someone would get a minor burn from splattering oil, or those lights that are supposed to keep the fries hot (but they don't), the manager made us put a pickle on the burn for one minute.  ??? :o   He told us it would take the sting of the burn out, and I don't know if it was power of suggestion or not, but it always worked.  ;) After the minute was up, we were to toss the pickle in the trash (health-codes, you know) then apply the proper first-aid cream and bandage.
