I just had to tell someone. I just discovered today that my best friend of 36 years and I are actually related! We are half-8th cousins, once removed!! We tried to find a link for years and couldn't then today I discovered one that I wasn't even looking for. Yeeeehh!

That must be very fun for you to find that missing link unintentionally, as opposed to all those people who spend so much wasted time checking out apparent genealogical links to no avail. Congratulations!

It was pure serendipity. I received a letter from a lady who had sent me some earlier info at my request on my friend's ancestors, and she just started going on about one of the other offshoots of the line and there was one of my own ancestors! I recieved an email from my friend's mom today congratulating me on finally being an official part of the family!  :D BTW, Bobo, genealogy time is never time wasted! I've put in 28 years! (says Zella putting in a plug for her favorite pastime. Okay, 2nd favorite, since I found this message board!)  :D

I found out years ago that one of my closet friends was a cousin thru marriage..on my step mothers side...

and then right before me and my ex divorced..we found out that his step grandmother was my step great aunt...talk about a tree with no limbs!!  That is why Arkie gets a bad name!!!!!!!!!!

Ah, but we've been there, done that, and we (it was a family effort) spent 3 years researching 1707 and failed. Sorry, that was purely bitterness from personal experience, and that of 5 friends, currently doing the same thing.

Back on topic.

It's actually pretty common to find a link between two persons if you can go back far enough in the same country. It even happens north of the Mason-Dixon!  ;) My cousin and her ex turned out to be 7th cousins, twice removed or something like that, although they never knew it while they were married. My ancestors and those of my best friend kept showing up in the same counties in the same states; even in neighboring villages in Germany, but till yesterday we couldn't even find one of her ancestors selling a cow or a chicken to one of mine!  ;D
