Subject: For Those Of You Who Like "Star Trek"

Written By: Hairspray on 05/07/02 at 06:46 p.m.

1) Which is your favorite "Star Trek" series?

2) Who's your favorite captain?

3) Reasons for both previous answers

I've been watching the classic series on video for the past week and I'm really enjoying it.  ;D :)

So...

The original/classic Star Trek is my favorite.

James T. Kirk's my favorite captain.

Reasons:

1) It certainly was an excellent concept for its time, was done as well as it could've been done, forged a path for future television shows to have ethnic diversity in cast members, gave good and strong role models for it's diverse cast, including women, provided positive lessons and sent positive messages in general.

2) Kirk kicked butt! No question about it, IMO. Honorable mention to Spock and crew.

I just think in the future shows made, the casts are too large and numerous - even though I know that's the way it has to be do to the times being different and all.

In that dept., I like simple, I guess.

My answer of 1 & 2 is the same as Hairspray's.
3. Kirk was the least calm of all the captains. Thus he was the most human and most fun to watch. And the original series had the crew with the most quirks in their personalities, especially Spock, Bones, and Scotty.

My favorite series was DS9.  Not only did it have gorgeous Dr. Julian Bashir, but it showed more of the Klingons than any of the other series.  Next Generation showed that Klingons can be "nice" (Mr. Worf), but there were few other recurring characters.  I think Gowron was the only one.  DS9, on the other hand showed both good and bad Klingons, proving that you cannot judge a whole race (or ethnic group) by the actions of a few individuals.  They also had episodes that reflected current events, but did not give them easy, solved-in-45-minutes answers.  We were goaded into thinking.

But the best Captian, in my opinion was Kirk.  I liked him because he was a hands-on kind of guy, sharing some of the same dangers as his crew.  (I say some, because I admit the life span of a security guard on that ship was about 0.02 seconds.  ;D ) I also liked the fact that he often tossed out the rule book, and Got The Job Done.

Lucky for Kirk, most of his superiors felt the same way.... ;D

DS9 was my favorite. I liked the story possibilities presented by the "last outpost" premise, and there was a cast of diverse and interesting characters. Also, the Cardassians were very good villains, and they were really fleshed out in the series.

Of the captains, I have to go with Sisko from DS9. He was somewhere between Kirk and Picard; a scrapper when he needed to be, but not quite so given over to the brotherhood of man outlook that Picard had.

I liked the original show and the cast the best...

Sometimes special effects cannot take the place of good, old fashioned originality and fun!!!! :D Kirk was a hoot! I used to wait for the vein in his head to explode when he got ticked...

Or Bones' gums to start bleeding becaused he knashed his teeth into non-existance! As for the Spock eyebrow going up so far he could part his own hair...but that's not logical...

Don't get me started!   ;D

1. Voyager

2. Janeway

I liked the concept of the show, that it was more back to the roots of Star Trek.  1 ship, on its own, dealing with the complete unknown.  Will they get home?  Will they ultimately fail?  And why do the Kazon suck so badly  (I'll admit, the worst of all of the bad guys we've ever seen in the franchise)?

I liked Janeway's style of leadership.  She worked with her crew, and listened to them intently, but wasn't afraid to take charge and kick butt.

Well well, look what I stumbled onto here... ;D

1)  I liked TNG the best

2)  Kirk, for sure...shoot first, ask questions later :)

I think TNG was the vehicle that actually turned Star Trek from "cult" status into an "institution"...Star Trek is bigger and better because of the TNG cast and crew.

1.  ST:V
2.  Sisko
3.  Voyager is my favorite series hands down because it a) doesn't involve "beaming down to the planet to make new friends", b)the ship itself is really cool looking, c)the crew of the vessel is forced to explore because they know nothing of their whereabouts, and d) technology for the TV has come far enough that aspects of these newer series look real.  Sisko is my fave Captain because he doesn't take nothin' from nobody, but has to maintain poise, grace and control in the face of countless species visiting his station.  I didn't like the series at all though; how can it be a Star Trek if they're not trekking anywhere?

The problem with DS9 is that after the fourth season, it turned into a soap opera about a war...which made it difficult to follow.  They had to introduce the ship because of the problem you stated, that it just wasn't plausible enough for them to be stuck on a space station...which is probably why Babylon 5 didn't work out too well.

Oh wow, I missed this when I was only a new member - thank you Rice for bringing it back !

1) Which is your favorite "Star Trek" series?

For me it's a toss-up between TNG and Voyager

2) Who's your favorite captain?

Picard

3) Reasons for both previous answers

It's hard to say.  Had I been around and watching when the Original was out, I probably would go for that.  I get frustrated watching it to see the same premise over and over, Kirk gets in fight and gets shirt ripped, Kirk fights off Alien three times his strength, Kirk makes nauseating speech.

Having now had my anti-Kirk gripe, the Original was ground-breaking in so many ways and credit where credit's due, had it not been for the orginal the rest wouldn't have followed.....

I liked Picard for his sense of humour, his grouchiness, and the foibles they built into his character (the inability to cope with kids).....

Janeway I am warming to - I'm glad they ditched that beehive hairdo she had in the earlier series  :P

Sisko always seemed ineffectual to me.... :(

A general comment on DS9 - given they were usually limited to haing the plot withing the station, I thought they did pretty well with their storylines.  I thought Quark is a fantastic charcter and his love/hate relationship with Odo was well worked.

Although every time I see Rene Auberjonois I can't help thinking of his roles in Soap/Benson  ;D

1) Which is your favorite "Star Trek" series?

Hmmm well I guess it's Next Gen, well that's the one I watch the most, I love voyager as well though.

2) Who's your favorite captain?

Picard, but I do like the others too... :-/

3) Reasons for both previous answers

I think that TNG was the first Star trek series I watched and also I was kind of more inclined to pick the captain from the series I like the most. I like the whole cast of TNG.

With Voyager I like the way it's different to the other Star Trek series.

I didn't used to like the older one (am I insane?) but I watched the reruns a little while ago and I think it's great.

Hmmm... Well

1) My favorite series would have to be a toss-up between Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Enterprise

2) My favorite Captain is definitely Kirk

3) Why do I like Star Trek TNG and Enterprise? Well, they get into the whole "Oh crap, we've found new aliens, what do we do?" aspect that makes Sci-Fi great. Voyager was all about Janeway and 7o9, and DS 9 was all about 'cloak and dagger' stuff. Why do I like Capt. Kirk? Because he had BALLS! F**k negotiating! Fire all weapons! Launch all photon torpedoes! Let's KILL 'EM! That...and he seemed to get...*ahem*...lots of love on every show...

1. TNG
2. Jean-Luc Picard
3. I just think that TNG was better written and wasn't so predictable as the first series. You always knew that the dude in the red shirt was going to bite the dust before the first commercial. And you always knew that Kirk was going to get the girl. Brent Spiner is an incredable actor. He is by far the best actor on any of the shows.

I met William Shatner once when I was about 7 or 8. Even at that age, I wasn't impressed.

Pretty decent "Enterprise" episodes lately, so BUMP :)
