Subject: Different Songs That Sound The Same

Written By: RockandRollFan on 05/20/02 at 07:55 a.m.

Have you ever heard different songs that sound almost exactly alike?  From different artists, I would say the "The End Of The Innocence" by Don Henley sounds just like "That's Just The Way It Is" by Bruce Hornsby.  As for same artist...Blue Oyster Cults "Don't Fear The Reaper" sounds like "Burnin' For You."  If you sing along to both songs with the other songs lyrics, it's like the same exact tune.  Am I crazy ::)

Funny you should mention that.  There has been a song on the radio in the morning that reminds me of Tina Turner's "What's Love Got To Do With It".

It's a male singer, and he does sing that line, but it's not the same song at all.  But the rhythm is similar.

I wonder if it is a legally permissible remake or "sample" used by permission?  Usually similar sounding songs are caught by the lawyers representing the artist or record company.

I have heard songs that sound a bit similar, by different artists.  Give me a while to think,  if I come up with any that are not known "samplings" I'll post them.

Thanks...I thought I was the only one that thought about stuff like this :D

Here are some of mine:

Chuck Berry's "School Day" and "No Particular Place to Go" sound almost exactly alike…

Kiss's "Hard Luck Woman" is Rod Stewart's "You Wear It Well" played sideways…

Britney Spears' "Oops I Did It Again" is Barbra Streisand's "Woman in Love" on speed…

Two sets of songs with the same intro:

Meat Loaf--Two Out of Three Ain't Bad/Commodores--Three Times a Lady
Linda Ronstadt--Blue Bayou/Billy Joel--An Innocent Man (case in point:  when the Billy Joel song was popular, the intro to what I thought was the Billy Joel song came on the radio, I sang in jest, "I feel so bad, got a worried mind," and it turned out that they were playing Linda Ronstadt's "Blue Bayou"!)

And then there's:

Rick James--Super Freak/MC Hammer--U Can't Touch This
Queen & David Bowie--Under Pressure/Vanilla Ice--Ice Ice Baby
Sly & the Family Stone--Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)/Janet Jackson--Rhythm Nation

Bad cases of sampling.

And the worst case of sampling:

Def Leppard's intro to "Rock of Ages" (that German-sounding stuff) is also the intro to the Offspring's "Pretty Fly (for a White Guy)"!

The intro to Super Furry Animals' "Rings Around the World" sounds almost identical to the intro to Hawkwind's "Silver Machine", but it does't sound tike a sample.

That one I heard mentioned on the radio, but one that really jumped out at me when I heard the song was Pulp's "Sunrise". The choir part near the end of that sounds incredibly (and I guess accidentally) similar to part of "Thunderhead" by WASP.

Funny how "There's No Other Way" by Blur always reminded me of Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play"...

...And surely Green Day's "Basket Case" was simply The Who's "The Real Me" with different words used for the same lyrics?

And the moment I heard "Love Out Me" by Siouxsie & The Banshees, I immediately thought of the Sisters Of Mercy's "Alice" and "Temple of Love". I haven't heard either of those two in a while, so I'm not sure which it sounds most like.

IMO, Limp Bizkit always sound like Suicidal Tendencies.   :P

I've thought this too about some songs with their intro's or backing tunes:

Zappacosta's 'Overload' (from Dirty dancing Soundtrack) I think sounds a lot like Robert Palmer's 'Addicted To Love'.
'Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic' by The Police soundslike A-Ha's 'Take On Me'.
'Sometimes' by Erasure sounds like Richard Marx's , 'Right Here Waiting'.

Please someone tell me that I'm not the only one - beacuse I thought I've been going mad with these comparisons! :)

I heard that is actually counting 1-2-3-4, in Swedish.

Aha, I know which song you're talking about. "What's Luv?" by Ashanti, featuring Fat Joe & Ja Rule, incase you're wondering.

It's actually nonsense, words just spouted out by Muut Lange as they began recording.  The band thought it sounded cool and left it.

When I first heard the piano intro to "Don't Look Back In Anger" by Oasis, I thought it was the piano intro to "Imagine" by John Lennon  ???

Of course, given Oasis' Beatlesque tendencies, I suppose this might not have been a coincidence...

If any of you have heard The Newsboy's "Shine" (Christian Rock group) that sounds like the intro to Hot Chocolate's "Sexy Thing."

Hmm, I remember thinking that when I first heard the song. My favourite Oasis song, nonetheless.

Afrika Bambaataa & Soul Sonic Force's "Planet Rock" and Planet Patrol's "Play At Your Own Risk"

Sly Fox's "Let's Go All The Way" and Boogie Boys' "A Fly Girl"

Phil Collins' "Sussudio" and "Who Said I Would" (both off the No Jacket Required album)

The Beatles' "Taxman" and The Jam's "Start". The songs are different but the rhythm underneath is identical.

Here are some songs the sound very identical:

"Sucker D.J.'s by Dimples D. (1983)
"Sucker M.C.'s" and "Hollis Crew" by Run DMC (1984) all sound very much alike.

the score on the opening credits for "Halloween III: Season Of The Witch" (1982) sounds very similer to score to the first Terminator (1984). To me it does anyway.

"Lend Me An Ear" and "Portrait Of A Master Piece" both by The D.O.C. are similer in a way (both off of the No One Can Do It Better album)

"Let The Bass Go" by The D.O.C. (1989)
"I'm Wit Dat" by Compton's Most Wanted (1990)
"Murder Was The Case" (remix) by Snoop Dogg (1993) all sound alike with that simple drum sound.

"Got To Be Real" by Cheryl Lyyn
"Best Of My Love" by The Emotions both songs sound very identical.

Bother of these songs are from Marvin Gaye: "What's Going On?" and "Mercy, Mercy Me" Not only do they sound alike but it's the same theme (The evil that men do).
Also: "Hello"-Lionel Ritchie & The Commodores/"Suddenly"-Billy Ocean.
"Der Komissar"-Falco + After the Fire/"Deep in the Dark"-Laura Brannigan.
"Kung-Fu Fighting" and "Kung-Fu"-Both by Carl Douglas

'Cities on Flame' by Blue Oyster Cult was modelled on the riff from 'The Wizard' by Black Sabbath.

After listening to the radio all weekend playing 'older' songs, they played one that I swore was going to be by America.

I can't remember the name of the song I thought it would be, but much to my suprise, the song continued on and became ***

Edited 'cuz I'm a doofus.  :-

Edit: For anyone who has read this, please purge it from your memory.  I have not heard any songs by Pink that remind me of America.  :-[ :-[ There is a song by a female singer, but I need someone to help me with a name.

The lyrics, in part, go: "maybe we'll meet in a club, and fall so deeply in love".  There's another line about "he'll drive a funky car".   ???  Anyone know who this is?

"I will not post when half asleep. I will not post when half asleep. I will not post when half asleep...."
