Subject: What does Everyone do for a living?

I was just thinking It's late and were all on this messageboard. so what profession is everyone in?  I was in the Navy, got out, couldn't find a job, so now I'm re-enlisting, (just gotta wait for my paperwork to get back).

Well, as some of you may or may not know (depends on who read my "venting" post), I am searching for a job.  The market absolutely sucks right now.  Even w/ a college degree I'm having a horrible time.  I'm going back to get my Master's either in the Fall or Spring.  (I have nothing better to do.)   :-[

To pay my bills, though, I work at a Gymnastics Club.  I've been there for almost 5 years.  The pay is horrible, but I absolutely love everyone I work with, and the hours aren't bad at all.

I feel like my standards are too high sometimes, too, but it's good to be picky.  Jobs are like relationships - you want to make sure you choose the right one.  I like to keep jobs for years (it looks better on a resume), so I'm not going to jump into a job where I don't think there's any security, room for growth or challenge.  Jobs like that don't come along too often, so it's better to wait for the right one instead of jumping into the first offer you receive.  I have to keep telling myself that, otherwise I'll feel like a loser.  ;)

I don't think your standards are too high at all.  Have you ever thought about working for Cintas?  I'm not sure where you're from, but Cintas is a work uniform supplier and they look to hire former military people.  From what I've heard, the benefits are great, and the pay is wonderful.  Here's a link if you're interested:

Whoa! Talk about ESP!   :o :o Screwball54, I was thinking about posting this subject this morning on the way into work, but you beat me to it.

Right now I am an Accounting Assistant.  Most of the time that's just a fancy name for "file clerk", but the company I work for has been teaching me some of the more advanced accounting procedures.  My boss is a big believer in cross-training in the workplace.  That means everyone knows how to do everyone else's job, with the idea that no one will get bored. Eventually I hope to get my degree, but being a single mom, that's taking a little longer than I had planned on.

I have spent most of my life working with numbers and money.  I started out as a cashier at the local fast food joint, and have worked at one in between studying for that degree.  I've worked as a bank teller too.  I'm not really interested in high finance stuff like investing or the stock market.

I think I have found the best job right here.  My company sells and repairs restaurant equipment, with a specialization in beverage systems (beer towers and soda dispensers).  I am learning about how these things work, and if I ever want to become a mechanic, my boss will pay for my education in that field (which he does for everyone).  The company also makes its own soda syrups, which we sell along with juice concentrates to local area restaurants and bars.

I certainly can.  That's a wonderful job; I know when my daughter was sick, the great nurses taking care of her made it so much easier for us.

I think it's important to love your job.  I've had jobs that paid well, better than I'm getting now, but I was miserable because I hated  the job.

I feel for those without jobs :(

I was fortunate to finish school in December 1979 and start my job with Queensland Railways in January 1980. I have worked my way up to a station master at Redbank, in Ipswich Queensland. I failed school and will have absolutely nothing to fall back on if I left the Railways. I have been in the Railways for 22 years now.

We haul stuff away. And we get paid for it. And if it's good stuff, we get to keep it. Or give it away. Or sell it. And you would not believe how people in LA like to pay to haul away good, expensive stuff. One time we got paid to take away a $1500. generator! I never have to buy anything. I haven't bought a light bulb in 15 years. I have a closet full of expensive dresses that never cost me a dime. I furnished my whole house for free. And as an extra perk, occasionally we even haul for celebrities. So the million dollar question is: howcum I am always broke?  :'(

Wish I could confirm those fun images, but in reality, I'm one of the "bad guys".  The town I live in is one of the biggest  planned communities in the U.S. and I'm one of the people responsible for making sure the people who live here follow the design and maintenance covenants.  It's not always the best job, but I like the people I work with, the benefits are decent, it's only 5 minutes from where I live and I get to spend half of my day outside with a camera.

That's cool. I was visualizing you handing tissues to wayward nuns.

You mean you make sure everyone's house is painted the same color and no one has a junk car dripping oil in the driveway? Oh my God! You are my worst nightmare!  :o

I just came-off a job at General Mills operating a packaging and palletizing machine called a 'Buhler' (no connection to the 80's movie), drove a forklift and assisted in monthly plant fumigations.  If you live in the west and use Gold Medal flour, I probably packaged it.
Now, I'm a professional job seeker.

Surprisingly, a junk car in the driveway is okay, it just can't be in the grass!  The weird thing about my town is that there are detached houses and then there are the townhouses, which we call clusters.  Each cluster has it's own color palette (only a few have houses painted the same color) and each cluster is it's own Homeowners association in addition to ours (we're the Mother ship, though, and they can't do anything that doesn't match our guidelines).  You'll be happy to know that the state of Virginia has a law that requires anyone who sells a house in a planned community to provide disclosure documents to the buyer so they know what they're getting into and can opt out if they want.

I only rent a condo here, when I decide to buy, I'll decide whether or not I can live in a planned community or not.
