Subject: Unusual wildlife encounters

Written By: XenaKat13 on 05/25/02 at 08:53 p.m.

I'm still laughing about what happened to me yesterday, and I wanted to share it, and find out if anyone else has had any unusual encounters with wild animals.

Yesterday morning, as my daughter and I were walking to the bus stop, a small bird dive-bombed out of a tree and hit me in the head.  http://www.inthe00s.com/smilies/smhair2.gif    Yes, you read that right, a bird hit me in the head.  After hitting me, it bounced off the side of a parked car and landed on the ground where it shook its head a bit, then hopped away, frantically trying to flap.  That was when I noticed it was a fledgling, probably on it's first attemped flight, so no wonder the poor thing couldn't steer well enough to avoid hitting me.

I was so suprised that I was unable to get much work done, I was giggling over it all day.  http://www.inthe00s.com/smilies/smhair1.gif

My daughter then reminded me of another incident last fall, when I was knocked over into a mud puddle by a rabbit.  Our apartment complex is set up like several attached townhouses. The laundry room is in the basement of the next bulding, and I was running over one night to pick up my last load.  It was dark and pouring rain so I didn't see the poor little bunny until I (almost) stepped on him.  Naturally the bunny exploded with fright, and ran away.  Since he was right under my foot, I fell over backwards, and I'm still laughing at myself to this day. (Mr. Bunny escaped unharmed).

So, my question for all of you is:  have you ever been witness to any unusual or funny wild animal behavior?  http://www.inthe00s.com/smilies/sheep.gif  http://www.inthe00s.com/smilies/elefant.gif

 Housepets don't count.  ;D

Edited 'cuz I'm having trouble with the smilies

Coming from a family of hunters...I have two that I can think of.

My grandmother was deer hunting one time back in the 70's when she decided she needed to take a break..so she sat at the base of a tree.  After a few minutes of sitting..she realized something was moving under her rear end.  So she stands up and realizies she was sitting on a coiled up rattlesnake!!  Needless to say...she did not need a break for the rest of the day.

Now my story..I was squirrel hunting with a boyfriend way down in the deep bottoms...and it was still hot outside...and my dad and grandpaps demanded that I wear snake guards since the snakes would still be moving and hard to see while walking through deep leaves.  I protested...but they won.  But I had decided to take them off when I got to the woods cuz they made so much noise...I would not be able to hear anything but them...but once again..I was over-ruled by the boyfriend....NEEDLESS to say..less than 10 minutes in the woods..as I am walking along..I see something move less than 2 feet from my right leg..and just as I look back over to see what it was...YUP!!  the biggest damn rattlesnake I have EVER seen struck me and got caught in the guards.  It was fighting and flinging its tail..and of course..I am screaming bloody murder!  The boyfriend stepped down on it body and cuts its head off..and I RAN out of the woods with the head still attached to the guards....got in the truck..and DEMANDED to be taken home!!  I was finished hunting for the day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!    http://www.theunholytrinity.org/cracks_smileys/otn/other/popworm.gif

For the day??  Heck I would have never gone in the woods again! :o

I don't know if mine counts or not, since it was at the zoo.  I was in the lion house with my daughter.  The lion turns around and backs up to the bars (at this point I move away from the lions, this just seemed wrong).  He lifts his tail and sprays someone just walking in the door.  I had to bite both cheeks in order not to laugh.  I almost peed in my pants.  The guy who got sprayed was not impressed.

I've been crapped on by birds a few times, but that's about it for my unusual encounters.

I feed 'possums all the time. Not intentionally, but they eat the cat food. I can always tell when we're entertaining a 'possum for dinner as they eat with a different sounding "crunch" than the cats do...  ::)

On my way to high school one day, I got unintentionally involved in a two dogs fighting melee.

That's two dogs fighting, just in case anyone didn't read it right the first time.

I was minding my own business, when this brawl erupted and next thing I knew they had knocked me up in the air and onto my back as they continued on fighting.

Right in front of my friends !  Very embarrassing !

I've swum with dolphins a number of times, both in the Pacific and the Atlantic...

WoW!  I'm envious too.  I can't swim.

Oh, yeah!  The part with the dolphins is ultra-cool, too ;D

There are places you can go to swim with them but it costs quite a bit. I was lucky enough that the dolphins I swam with like to ride waves. Didn't cost me anything :)
