Subject: What is anyone's phobia?

I have quite a few, I am afraid of spiders, and I am also deathly afraid of snakes.  I am afraid of tornadoes.

Thunderstorms....lightening and tornados..I am at my folks tonite (and yes I am 31 and still run to mommy's) because it was storming and where I am sitting right now is only about 20 feet from their storm shelter....and in the south...normally that is the only safe place to be in a thunderstorm!!!!!!

I'm afraid of school. But it can't hurt me any more! Less than a week left.

Seriously, though, I'm not really afraid of anything. Life brings challenges that we face, however we face them proves our toughness of character and human spirit. I can't spend my time being afraid of things when I know pure knowledge of things add to advancement.

Oh, there is one thing. Natural disasters. I hear about them on the news, and when people mention them on the messageboards. Thankfully, I don't come across them, although I make it my duty to remember to think about all of you suffering from these cruel phenomena wherever and whenever possible.

Whenever I go into a room with a door alone, I'm afraid I'm going to be locked in when the door closes. That happened at a restroom at a rest stop, when I was finished using thye restroom, I walked to the door to walk out, all I saw was a piece of wood, no handle.  I was frantic for 5 minutes, banging on it, when i saw a sign over the sink saying:

=========>ENTER

Sharks and bears. I'm totally afraid to fly-but I do.
And there's my irrational fear of grasshoppers. I've been known to run screaming from the garden if I find one.

I'm afraid of water deeper than my ankles, my brother almost drowned me (accidentally) in the wading pool when we were little.  But for some reason, that did not stop me from going on my office's harbor cruise last Christmas.  I guess it was because I did not actually get wet.

I'm also very leery of heights, but only under certain circumstances.  I can look out the window of a tall building at the horizon with no problem, but I dare not try to look down at the street below. I've been hiking, and can look down a mountain easily too, as long as it's not a sheer cliff.

Natural disasters do not scare me at all, but I believe that is because I've never had to deal with any "real" ones.  Hurricanes are pretty much wimped out by the time they get up here, and I'm always indoors when a blizzard comes along. We do get occasional "earthquakes" but they are a joke--barely strong enough to rattle dishes.

I'm afraid of people who come on too strong (you know, people you've only known for five minutes and they're already plotting out your future together).  I got stalked on college, really nasty case that involved letters smeared with blood (not human blood) and two emergency trips to the hospital.  It took me ten years to stop panicking when I noticed someone looking at me, but I still run like a chicken if I think someone is too intense.

Airplanes, airplanes, airplanes!  I was scarred as a child (horrifying experience on a jet), and 9-11 didn't help matters.  The mere sight of an airplane makes my heart stop.

I am scared to ride on Amusement park rides.  Disney World's rides are OK, but I don't trust the mechanics who work on those rinky-dink rides at fairs that periodically come to small towns.  They can barely form a complete sentence much less correctly assemble the tilt-a-whirl.

Roaches (especially the ones w/ wings) freak me out.  Actually, most bugs w/ wings freak me out.  If they can fly faster than I can run, I'm freakin'.

There are many, many more phobias I could list, but I don't want anyone to think I'm a psycho. ;)

My phobia is driving.  I don't drive and am never a happy passenger.  Makes life very difficult at times :(

Hey Jaytee - I have a driving phobia too.  I am nearly 35 and have never driven.  I am fine as a passenger - but I have a phobia about my own ability to do the actual driving.

I also have mouse/rat/gerbil/hamster phobia - they completely freak me out - and I am not good with frogs either.

The phobia that affects me the most in my day to day life tho is my stair/escalator phobia.  I can go up - but I cannot go down.  Its not a height thing as I can stand on the highest building and I also skydive.  Its like a visual trust thing - hard to explain.  Visually I see all the stairs rise up and become one step - so while my brain knows there is a flight of them below me - my eyes are telling me there is just one step.  My legs wont trust my eyes or my brain and they turn to jelly first and then to lead.

Its a joke among my friends that I know the location of every lift in every city in Australia.

Hi BMG

Thanx for sharing.  I spent a weekend at an Anxiety Disorder Clinic and if it's one thing I learnt it's that all sorts of people suffer phobias.  I was in the company of a Judge, a Doctor, a Teacher and various other interesting people.

These posts have brought to mind a story many years ago on A Current Affair of a property owner out west who had a pet chimpanzee.  He had taught it how to drive!  My husband thought this was hilarious (I just glared and said  "if  you say one bloody word....").  To top it all off the car the chimp was driving was a Mercedes Benz!!

Ya gotta laugh!!
Cheers ;D

Spiders - big or small - dead or alive.

If I see one hubby has to squish it and show me where the body is. I still can't bring myself to remove a dead body though.

Surprisingly I see less since we moved to Australia than I used to when we lived in England. (although the ones I see here are all big buggers!)

I have so many phobias I don't even know where to begin. First and foremost is my fear of flying. The more and more I fly the more and more I hate it. If I never get on a plane again in my life, I would be very happy.

I also have a fear of driving. That could stem from my vision problems even though I could be using my vision problems to pepectuate my phobia. I do get kind of fearful as a passager but not as much as I would if I was driving.

I also hate snakes and scorpians. I don't mind spiders as long as they are not black and furry. They are the ones that bother me.

I get very nervious when the sailboat heels over a bit. DC thinks I crazy but he is very accomendating.

There are many others. I am just one of those people who basically fears EVERYTHING!!!!!

Merinthophobia- Fear of being bound.  Stems from a bad car accident I had 12 years ago.  Used my face as an airbag on my Mazda Rx7 and suffered a head injury.  Because of the nature of the injury they could not provide any anasthesia  sewing my nose back on, I woke up during the operation  not knowing why I was there or what was being done.  All I knew was that I was strapped to a table and there were faceless people (couldn't see well because of the bright light above my head) hovering over me causing some BIG discomfort.  I fought the straps hard and cursed harder then thankfully passed out.

I have heard of so many occurances of this happening.

My mum works as an anaesthetist at the local hospital- when you're under anaesthetic, they monitor you and make sure nothing's going wrong. That's one of the main jobs of an anaesthetist- supervising. So try not to worry.
I have a few fears myself... Including Avril Lavigne and Britney Spears. And Gareth Gates (because my younger sister is possessed by the spirit of his hairgel. She used to découpage her room in pictures of him.)
