Subject: It's finally happened, my computer is obsolete

Written By: Screwball54 on 06/14/02 at 11:26 p.m.

I bought my computer a little over a year ago, Today it became obsolete.  It all started inocently enough, I was at the computer store looking around, when I spotted it, a computer game I just had to have, so i made the purchase, and took it home.

When I got it home, it installed flawlessly.  "Thats my Monster machine at work" I thought to myself.  Newest virsion of DirectX was installed and I was ready to go.  I click on the Icon for the game, and the game loads, I go to move the mouse, and thats when it happened. The cursor just crawled slowly across the screen.  Set the details to the lowest detail, cutting the resolution in half, and still performs slow. and the sounds messed up (probally because of lack of ram), Guess My Anthlon 900 with 128Meg of ram is not what it used to be. :(

More than likely the computer's running fine and there's some conflict with your DirectX

It could be, I hate software problems, thier always the hardest to fix.  Anyways, the game I bought was Morrowind, and it recomends either a Radeon 7200 or a geforce 2 or faster, and I only have a Vanta w/16MB.

I think that's your problem right there. A game like Morrowind needs way more graphic muscle than 16Mb video. I wouldn't go junking a still-fairly decent system like yours until you upgrade your video. You can find nice 64Mb boards with the geForce chipset for around $100 and maybe save yourself from having to buy a brand new system just for Morrowind.

Although, no lie, that is exactly what the guy who sits next to me at work did. Bought the game, it ran choppy, but he was so hooked that he ran out and bought a new computer just to play it on.

Of course you could bypass all of that and just get an Xbox. Morrowind was released for it last week.

Good luck!

I upgraded the ram yesterday, and now it runs fine at 800X600 resolution.  I ordered a 64mb card with a radeon chipset of UBid on friday.  It may not be top of line, but it was a recomended one on the box for the game.  I tried the xbox version and the controls are messed up, I always hated thoes stick things and the Xbox you have to use one to look and the other to move.  I'm not that coordinated. but for the money i spent I could have almost got an Xbox.

That'd the same processor I have. Screwball, is it, by chance, a Compaq?

Most definitely a video card issue.  Just grab yourself a GeForce 2 MX400, that'll do the trick.  You can probably get hold of a non-TV Out version for under a hundred.  Or look into a GeForce 4 MX440.  Not the greatest of cards, but for the price they're pretty damn decent.
