Subject: New Orleans

Written By: Natalie on 06/15/02 at 12:52 a.m.

Has anyone ever visited New Orleans?  What are your fondest/worst memories?  For those who haven't visited New Orleans, what do you think it's like?  Any crazy New Orleans stories?

I have been there 4-5 times, once during Mardi Gras, all I can say is CRAZY!!!, but what a good time, I love the "biker bar" Johnny Whites, always have a good time there, and the food, awesome :), I'm going again in October, just can't stay away

I only stayed there a few minutes. My dad couldn't stand the 100 degree heat and humidity. And we had just come from a hot week with my cousin in El Paso.

My Dad used to send planes to airshows all round the world for his job and one of the last shows of the season was New Orleans. One of his pilots got mugged there and had his wallet stolen. He thought it was quite funny really as the wallet was stuffed to bursting and must have looked like a real haul.Except it was full of random notes left over from other trips,a couple of dollars, francs, marks etc and basically completely worthless!Apart from that they had a good time! I alas have never been but not for want of trying!

I was there for a couple of nights last June (on a coach tour). It wasn't too hot or humid. Nice to walk Bourbon Street in the evening to feel the atmosphere, and the tourist area near the French Quarter during the day. The place must be nuts during festival, though.

Went out of town to see some alligators as well :)

Last time I was in New Orleans was to visit my brother in '87.  We had a great time in the French Quarter (despite it being a fairly seedy area).  Great bars, shall we say...um, rustic?  I didn't see much more of the city since I had to get back to the ship.
The worst memory from there would have to be the huge (and I mean HUGE) cockroaches I saw a few times while walking.

Been there numerous times when I lived in LA. Best thing about it is the all-you-can-eat sushi bar (Little Tokyo II) east of the main airport. Only problem is they stopped serving green tea ice cream, so I had to go a few miles south to Little Tokyo I to get that after my main meal...

Those are probably Palmeto beetles. They have them in Hawai'i and Florida too. They're so big you can hear them scurry across the floor!
You have to go to the Cafe DuMonde for beignets and cafe au lait(doughnuts and coffee). And if you're an Anne Rice fan they have a tour of locations from her books. Gotta see the cemetaries too. And eat, eat, eat!!!

I was there one time when we lived in Florida.  I was bummed because I had wanted to try some "authentic Cajun cuisine" that I'd always heard about..but I was quite pregnant at the time and decided against it.  :-/
We didn't do anything wild though, sorry!  We went to the aquarium and it was really nice.  That and I saw my first "window washer"...he ran out in the middle of the street and started washing our car window..tripped me out, being a "smalltown girl" I'd never seen anyone do that!  ::)  Course he just wanted money, but as I recall hubby didn't give him any.  He just said "Hey, I didn't ask him to do it!"  We were both caught off guard a little by it.  My husband's mom heard the story, and having been to New Orleans several times, she said "Oh yeah..sorry, I guess I should have warned you about them."
You're a little late for that!  :o LOL!

Yes, you were wise to decide against the cajun cuisine - very spicy.  I don't think baby would've been happy.  You'll hafta come back and try the jambalaya and crab cakes...MMMMM!

That's so funny about the window washer.  I've seen a few in my time, but nowadays when I drive through New Orleans I lock my doors.  Who knows if they really want to wash your windows or steal your car?

Not wanting to offend anybody but if I went to the USA, then by reading this thread I would be leaving New Orleans out of my list of destinations. Can we have some positive feedback about the place.? Like I get the impression from television that it is a popular place for jazz music. Is this correct?

Reddy, New Orleans is a very nice place to visit, although it does have a reputation for being one of the dirtiest cities in America. Of course with all the tourists I expect it's hard to stay spotless!

Not only is it a great place to find jazz, but I have had some memorable moments listening to blues there as well. And don't even start me on the restaurants!!

Reddy, if you have a chance to visit New Orleans...by all means, VISIT.  The city is rich in culture - there are tons of museums, historic landmarks, antique shops, you name it!  Also, the party never ends in New Orleans.  Although it is pretty dirty, you have so much fun while you're there, you hardly notice the filth.

Yes, it is the Jazz capital, but the ironic thing is that there isn't one Jazz radio station in New Orleans.  I absolutely love Jazz (Contemporary/Smooth Jazz), and every time they start a station down here, it never works out.  Who would've thunk it?

Yeah, I can dig it...but you don't hear much Dixieland down in the city.  I've decided, as of lately, that I really enjoy listening to Bluegrass music.  I actually love all kinds of music, but I'm partial to Jazz and THE EIGHTIES (of course). ;)
