Subject: Best & Worst Songs Of All-Time

Written By: Junior on 07/22/02 at 01:46 p.m.

In your opinion, what are the best and worst songs of all time?

I think the best song of all-time as of right now is "Dreamer" by Ozzy Osbourne.

I think the worst song of all-time as of right now is "Make 'Em Say Uhh" by Master P. Don't get me wrong, Master P is cool, but I barely lived through that chorus, I can't stand it!

Best song -Any song by Linkin Park

Worst song -Anything pop like Britney Spears or the Backstreet Boys.

I have too many best songs to choose from so I couldn't even narrow it down 10. All I'll say is probably anything by The Smiths. Or REM's, Loosing My Religion. Or The Bluetones, Slight Return. Damn - I knew I couldn't do this.

Worst song: Save Your Love by Renee and Renata ( I can't listen to with song without laughing!)

Even worse, it brings back tears to the eyes remembering the video (especially the way that a weakly-tossed rose suddenly turns up flying in at high speed onto a balcony twenty feet up)

Definitely seconded as "worst song of all time".

I'm going to be boring and say "Bohemian Rhapsody" as best song of all time: I keep forgetting just how good it is, but my daughter has just started watching the Wayne's World BR video on MPG and I've got back into it again.

   While many songs qualify for best and wost, two off the top-o'-my-head;

Best: "Comfortably Numb" - Pink Floyd

Worst: "Mexican Radio" - Wall Of Voodoo

Best (More than one and in no particular order):

Duran Duran's "Lonely In Your Nightmare", "Save A Prayer", "Grey Lady Of The Sea" (Simon LeBon Solo Effort) and many of their actual hits like "Hungry Like The Wolf".

I had to place those up there as a "Duranie" (Duran Duran Fan), of course.  ;)

Pink Floyd's "Comfortably Numb"

Led Zep's "All Of My Love"

Queensryche's "Silent Lucidity"

Guns N' Roses' "November Rain"

Metallica's "Unforgiven"

The latter 3 being the best 1990's efforts, IMHO.

I absolutely agree with Davester about Wall Of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" being the Worst.

Just a note:  Me insulting your favorite bands should in no way be construed as me insulting you.

I realize I'm not going to be able to convince you of this, but Eminem is simply the most dynamic, interesting person in music today (and one hell of a rapper).  Radiohead, on the other hand, have stagnated into pseudo-intellectual wankery on their last two albums, while presenting it as innovation.  Just because it's "experimental" doesn't mean it's good.  And Depeche Mode... don't get me started on them.  Bah.  (When you're a music snob, you get to say "Bah" a lot.)

He's certainly influential, but I think there has to be a line drawn where kids (especially, I have found, the young impressionables) wear the hoodies, the hats, quote the hateful lyrics, adopt a hateful attitude... all this from a guy who wants to have his say? I thought there was a law about parental guidance labels - if it's down to parents' discretion, perhaps there should be... at least until they know what he's trying to say.

Eminem is talented.  He's an f'n spectactular lyricist.  I have a certain amount of respect for Radiohead (or I used to, at least, before they became too pretentious to bear), but Thom Yorke never came up with anything as affecting as Stan, or as hilarious as My Name Is, or as entertaining (though The Bends come close) as Eminem's last album.

BTW:  I find a lot of Pink Floyd songs overrated and unlistenable as well, so I do not disagree with the analogy.  I would liken Eminem to the Sex Pistols of today, however.

I've been keeping this in for awhile, but I disagree with Tarzan Boy and anyone else who puts Alanis Morissette or Sarah McLachlan on there 'worst' list. Just because there not your musical style doesn't make them bad. I lot of people like Rickie Lee Jones, but she stinks as far as I' m concerned. In fact there are several bands that are on my 'worst' list that aren't on others (see B-52's, Starland Vocal Band, Survivor, etc.). It's a matter of taste. And don't be angry because you disagree with one's taste in music. I had to get that out. :-/

I, like J.C have been following this thread for a while. I wouldn't call Eminem one of the 'best artists'. He is controversial and sells albums beacuse his first single off all 3 albums is jokey, sarcastic and takes the p*ss out of lots of differnet 'pop' stars. I personally don't understand what he has against Moby, and I wouldn't even call his music 'techno' but thats another thread. I'm still trying to figuire out whther or not I agree with the Eminem/Sex Pistols comparision - I'll get back to you on that :)

Your choice of best and worse songs are all a matter of taste, and I happen to agree with a lot of Tarzan Boys choices of good artists. Radiohead are indeed not 'stagnated', espcially here in the UK. They are extremely popular on the indie front, even though I have never really got into a lot of their stuff.

I agree with some of your worst choices My_Name_Is_Kenny, but some I quite like! Do you like an other Stereophonics songs, or just dislike 'Mr Writer', same goes with your Police choice?

Everyone likes different music, and I guess its something we gotta accept - even if it does require a little comment to state your opinion :)

It's great when we are able to express our opinions freely and whatever dissagreements arise are aimed at the subject and not the person.  :)

Quoting:

Eminem does not compose music; he does not play any instruments; he has nil when it comes to vocal ability (can he even dance like those monkeys in the boy-bands?). In fact, if it weren't for Dr. Dre and a marketing machine, this untalented, foul-mouthed, maggot would still be "rapping" for the neighborhood kids at high school parties. He's, in short, a showman. A showman like Marilyn Manson, like Ricky Martin, like Lou Bega, Britney Spears, and their ilk. End Quote

I must agree here.

I did like the "catchy-ness" of the tune "The Real Slim Shady" initially, but then the music remained unchanged through the entire song. He "rapped" to a recording from a music machine that was repetitive and boring. I'm convinced the only reason the song got any popularity was because of the controversial aspect of the "lyrics" and at the expense of the people whose names are mentioned in the song. Eminem's working on the formula of controversy just as other artists did before him. I think it's quite boring myself. <yawn> http://www.click-smilie.de/sammlung/schlafen/schlafen009.gif

Hmm.  Questions like this are always going to be very subjective.

With that in mind, my current votes for best song of all time (so far) would be "Desert Rose" by Sting.  That opinon will change at some point in time, but for right now I can't get enough of it.

For the worst, I vote for "Push The Little Daisies" by a group I think is called Ween.  I'm not sure if they are a local group or one-hit wonders, but I've never heard from them since.

Ween are an indie-rock, borderline novelty band that are hugely popular among the underground.  I hear good things about them, but I haven't listened to them.  Basically, all I know is that I like the cover of their album, "Chocolate and Cheese."
