I'm naming entire strips here, as it would be unfair to single out characters from entire universes of loved characters...

I'll go with the Far Side as well...

Asterix (exists primarily in books, rather than daily strips; does this count? If not, second choice is Tonari no Yamada-kun (now renamed Nono-chan); while I can't read Japanese, the film of the strip is one of my all-time favourites and the one translated example I've seen is really funny)
Tintin (see above; second choice is Bristow)
Dirty Pair (see above, with the additional complication that they originally appeared in an animation; second choice is "Archie", although I think they also are primarily in book form, so my third and final choice is Cathy. )
