Subject: How Did We Get Our Member Names?

Written By: Indy Gent on 08/01/02 at 03:57 p.m.

Some are pretty obvious, like RockandRoll_Fan, Fuss Budget Van Pelt, Goldie, Jessica. I would have loved to bring this question up for Panda before she left us. Mine is pretty obvious, the first and last initials of my real name. What about some others ?

Good Thread J.C. !

You have already identified mine, but I will explain it further for the benefit of any of the younger board members who may not be aware of it's etymology :

The comic strip Peanuts written by Charles Schultz :

One of the characters was Lucy (Linus and Rerun's sister).  Their surname was Van Pelt.

Lucy was a crabby character, always finding f ault somewhere or being outraged about this or that.  So much so that in one strip she described herself with some pride as being a Fuss Budget !

Hence the FussBudgetVanPelt - it originally was my Napster username (in the days when Napster was a good word  :'( :() and I chose it because every other name I thought of was already taken....in the end I had to think of something that no-one else had.... :)

One step further : My daughter drew the avatar freehand on sight from one of my Charlie Brown books - you would notice some similarity with the avatar of Reddyrules, which is also her work.

Quite often my avatar reflects how I feel, but I try not to let that spill into the board (too much  :D)

This one is pretty easy.  Since am from Saginaw, MI with the nickname of Sagnasty, guess what people are here called?

As for Wolveroses, this might be more complicated.  I'm a die-hard U of M (University of Michigan) fan.  Their nicknames are the Wolverines.  When they won the Rose Bowl back in the day,  I just added the two together to summon, Wolveroses.

Mine is easy too.  At least it was till today. ;)

Kat is a shorter form of my real first name.

I've added the "Xena" bit to inspire a little bit of self-confidence.  I started liking the show at around the same time my marriage ended, and I liked the whole concept of independence without regard to gender.

The number 13 was added when I chose my e-mail ID.  Since it's a number traditionally associated with 'bad luck' I was hoping to use it as a talisman to avert any more that might be coming my way.

I wouldn't say I'm the biggest fan, no.  Not to the point of memorizing whole blocks of dialog, and the names, birthdays and home addresses of everyone connected with the show from the stars down to the floor sweepers.  :P (My brother is like that with his favorite shows.)

But I do like to watch it, and since it has finished it's run, I'm collecting the show on video to catch the episodes I've missed.

Acutally mine is more of a family nickname than based on the fact that I am blonde. My grandmother gave me my given name and had my mother been the one to name me, she would have named me Goldie. So I decided to use it as my e-mail address and user name here!

All Hail FBvP's daughter!  8)

My name comes from the UK comedy sci-fi TV series "Red Dwarf".

At one point, the dead hologram (Rimmer) gets the idea to generate a second hologram off his disc. This degenerates into a fight during which Rimmer#2 calls Rimmer#1 "Mr Gazpacho", dredging up horrifically embarrasing memories.

As I have a store of these memories myself  ;) , I decided to name most of my on-line personas "mrgazpacho".

Written By: Zella on 08/01/02 at 08:12 p.m.

Zella is short for Azazella.

Azazello was a character in Mikhail Bulgakov's satiric novel "The Master and Maragartia" which I read several times in my late teens. The character started out very repulsive, but became quite lovable in the end. I was always attracted to the name, so when I got my first online account I feminized it to Azazella. When I signed up for this board, I just shortened it to Zella.

After five months of being on this board, I have become Zella. I really don't know who I am anymore... ::)

In the 80's I must have owned every kind of hairspray sold at the time, including color sprays. I had a shelf lined with them. I'd use whichever I felt like using at any given time. Written By: Goreripper on 08/02/02 at 00:29 a.m.

Mine grew from something I once wrote in the guest book of a friend's website: "Join me as I wade knee deep through the gore of the false." It was a remark relating to my dislike of the hypocrites, pseudo-elitists and other hangers-on that infest the sub-culture to which I belong. As Manowar said: "Death to false metal." My motto became "Death to the false". Not actual, physical death, of course!  ;D
I believe people should stand up for what they believe in, no matter what it is, but they should really believe it, not just be saying so because it's seen to be cool or to be part of a crowd. To me, that's falsehood, and I don't like that.
So I have been known to 'rip the gore of the false'. And that's where it came from. Hope I haven't confused too many people now.
I'm really not a very scary person.  ;D

Written By: philbo_baggins on 08/02/02 at 03:59 a.m.

In my case, the "Philbo Baggins" handle goes back a long way: it was a nickname first bestowed at school, which turned into my username for my first on-line account (in pre-internet days, round about 1989/90).  Since then I've always used "philbo" as a nickname where possible, though recently (especially since LOTR came out) it's been taken more often than not, so it has to be philbo_baggins in full.

Mine is pretty easy to guess - it's a nickname derived from 'Christina' :)

It has stuck since year 7. Some people in our form were playing truth or dare, and this guy that I liked, Matt, chose truth. He was asked to pick a girl to kiss on the cheek ( oh, the innocence of yr 7!).I remember this so well, hesaid: 'Come on Crizzie Lizzie' - so kinda taking the pee aswell as 'Liz' isn't exactly a middle name! As we were pretty good mates 'Crizzie' kinda stuck and then it got shortened to 'Criz'. All my mates from school call me 'Criz' or 'Crizzie' still :)

I do so hate it when a perfectly rational explanation forces my mind out of the gutter!  ;D

My name comes from back in the days when I was a sys0p on a local bbs.  I had been around for several months, using a few different pseudos; but nothing ever suited me enough to stick.  It happened during my time on the board that I had gotten to know several of the members rather well, and had stuck by several of them during difficult times in their personal lives.  Well, one day we were all sitting around at a meet, and someone brought up how well we all knew one another.  I pointed out that, although I knew many of them quite personally, none of them really knew anything about me.  Of course, they all disagreed.  Right up until I put up $100 to whomever could correctly give one piece of personal information about me:  last name, address, phone number, birthdate...  and nobody could claim the prize.  Mystery Woman it was, and it stuck.

Well, mine seemed pretty simple to me.  I fist got a PC back in 1996, specifically so I could play Wing Commander and X-Wing.  My pilot names in those games were Thunder and Vampire, respectively.  When I first got online in late 1996, I began using Thunder as a SN name where ever possible.  Then the game X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter came out, which was a multiplayer game, and I wanted to play it BAD.  So I went to the Zone and signed up, and someone else was using the name Thunder.  So I chose Vampire.  Someone had THAT one.  SO I figured I'd mix the two into ThunderVamp.  But someone else had THAT one!  So for the hell of it I threw a 9 onto the end, and that one went through.

And I've been ThunderVamp9 ever since...

With the exception of my online squadron, where I am simply RWS_Thunder.

I know, I know! But if I told, I'd have to kill you. ;D And you'll never guess. It's very creative.

I took mine from the classic Genesis track 'Suppers Ready'.

One part of the song is entitled ' As sure as eggs is eggs' (co-starring the delicious talents of Gabble Ratchet)

And there you have it!!

But do you know where they got it?
Gabble Ratchet is the sound of wild geese that heralds the arrival of archangels.

I started using this name about five years ago when I saw an "In Living Color" skit where they were making fun of that "OBV" or whatever song with Steve Park as "Rice Cube" and he was singing about how he was down with "M S G" :)  I've used it to submit parodies to the site since 2000  ::)

I need to clarify something here.  When I originally posted to that thread, my screen name read "crazydon."  I have since changed it to "Crazy Don."  Just thought you'd like to know.

A friend of mine and I went to a party that he only was aquianted with one person, so we didn't know really anyone there.  We were introducing ouselves to 2 women and the name Race Bannon just came to me.  My buddy went with it in stride so that night I was Race to a couple of our fellow guests.
The next week I had forgotten all about it until I went over to my buds house, he said he called one of the women and they had asked how his friend Race was, he said "who"
"Your friend that was with you, Race Bannon"  He lost it ;D, and upon telling me, I lost it ;D.
Since then it's been a common screan name for me.

My name isnt self explanatory

ha ha there are several theories ppl have come up with

Masq_of_red_death= Masque of red death by Edgar Allen POe- famous writer-bipolar-like me :P
partially true

Masq= mask I am obsessed with a poem by Langston HUghes "We wear the mask" I am of the belief that no one is ever themselves around everyone.

REd= favorite color  :D

death= in past 5 yrs 4 ppl i have loved have been claimed by God :'( (R.I.P. /S.A/ J.P./R + D W) :'(, I am tied to death through my life. I am i suppose one of the few ppl in my *circle* of friends who isnt afraid to die. Im a bit cynical and maybe that helps.

Syncronos means 'at the same time,' but Cronos is also the Greek god who in mythology ate his children (Zeus, Hera, etc.) so they wouldn't overthrow him. Zeus ended up getting out and taking over...but that's another story

Anyway, because of my ravenous appetite (can anyone here eat 10 or more Taco Bell soft tacos at one sitting?), I chose that name, but since I am no Greek god, I'm only a synthetic bearer of the name...thus, we have Syn-cronos

That...and it sounds really cool... 8)

I always thought you were just a Jonny Quest fan :)  I guess you have ulterior motives like everyone else, eh?

My nick came from an old Europe track "Aphasia' which was a rockin instrumental - 'Aphasia' literally being the name of a disorder which results in hardness of hearing - probably what would have occurred had i not discovered the volume button after my rowdy teen years (!) The '2000' suffix is the year I first got my computer and came online!  ;)

I remember Jonny Quest when I was a kid, but haven't seen it in 25 years.  I heard there was a more recent version.
Jonny was the kid, correct?  Son of Dr. Smith, I think. And there was his friend Hadji and the dog Bandit.  Race was the go to stud guy.  I have no idea why that name came up when it did, but it does sound ultra-cool. 8)
