Subject: Kazaa

Written By: Libby on 08/11/02 at 12:38 a.m.

I was wondering if anyone has used Kazaa.  Is it safe to use with a cable modem?  I don't plan on sharing files with anyone but I worry about someone being able to access information off my computer.
I appreciate any input you might have!   :)

KaZaA is good. Grokster is good too. Both are easy to use....you WILL be inundated with junkmail from now on though....

I use Kazaa extensively.  It does pop up the occasional ad and I've heard all sorts of rumours but never had any problems.

Be careful, nobody likes a freeloader! ;)
People have been known to cancel uploads (at 95%) if you aren't sharing!

You are interested in using Kazaa but are not planning to share your files with other users.  I thought the whole reason they call it a File Sharing Program is for people to share files.  If they have more people taking instead of sharing then the whole program would collapse....wouldn't it.

When you download from any file sharing program you take your chances.  That is the price you pay for getting free stuff.  I have downloaded the backdoor virus once from Kazaa, I believe that allows for another computer to gain access to yours.   ???   Regardless, I am still quite happy with Kazaa.

Well put, Islandgirl.  One should share files if one plans on taking them.   You know, honor among thieves, and all that...

I absolutely love Kazaa.  The best part about Kazaa is that if the person you're downloading from logs off, the program automatically searches for the same song from another user and starts off where it ended.  I have found every song I've looked for (and I like some odd songs).

The only thing I don't like about Kazaa is the stupid talking ads.  I mean, I'll have my speakers turned up and some dumb woman's voice starts talking about wireless video surveillance cameras.  The first time that happened I almost had a heart attack.  I thought someone was in my house.

I use KaZaa all the time but lately for some reason the transfer rate drops to about .3 to .7 and downloading one 3 minute song could take up to 3 days (okay only slight exaggeration).

I use Kazaa and Winmx.  If I cannot find a song on Winmx i try on Kazaa.  I like it.  The only problem i have with Kazaa is I cannot see the times of the songs.  And I hate those pop-up adds.

I know I've replied to the post late but Kazaa is generally a good file-sharing device.

Sharing files is the proper thing to do. It is not a share all or not at all scenario as there is a designated 'sharing folder' for you to keep the files you want other users to download from. You choose what goes into that.

Kazaa allows you to get things you never think you can. I downloaded a full 'Charlie Chaplin' film the other week.

Downloading with a normal modem will be tough. If you get broadband, you can download music within about 5/10 minutes and videos in an hour or two.

I enjoy using Kazaa tolisten to music and watch films.

I recommend Kazaa Lite instead of Kazaa. Kazaa Lite comes without all that spyware and junk.

I use Imesh and quite like its userability and search function.

I have picked up a few viri's from Kazaa in past months.

You have to be careful with KaZaa. My nephew downloaded and uploaded freely with KaZaa until one day he couldn't get on line. He asked me to check with his ISP to find the problem. They couldn't tell me direct but informed my sister that the account has been suspended because copyright laws were broken. My nephew kept almost everything he has in 'My Shared Folder" which enables people to upload from him. It scared the hell out of them as it would I when thinking of a possible $100,000 fine and possible imprisonment. My nephew is only 15 and now has grown up real quick with laws on copyright infringments.

I have Kazza lite, and a cable modem. I don't recomend using the original kazza (I here it wrecks your computer, but this is just a rumour).

I share files all the time and nobody's accessed my computer.

The only thing I don't like about Kazza, is that the fastest speed I've ever gotten is only like 20kb/s! That only lasted for half a second (no joke).

And I have a cable modem for f--- sakes!

I always had a worse scenario than that - never did I see anything go faster than 4 kb/s. It was worth it, though... stupid pitiful modem...

Give me WinMX any day of the week over Kazaa. WinMX doesnt have the 128 bit cap either.

I tried WinMX and couldn't find a single thing.  Gimme Kazaa.  If any of you are into more obscure stuff, I hear Soulseek is good.  If you don't mind downloading stuff one at a time.

Funny I have found more hits with WinMX than I ever did for Kazaa for 70's and 80s tunes. Are you sure your typing in the names correctly?  ;D

I concur. I have no problems finding tunes, even the rare ones. I have absolutely no complaints about WinMX, especially with the added bonus of it being totally spyware free. Kazaa is loaded with spyware.

Kazaa Lite is much better than Kazaa. There are no adverts and you don't give your e-mail address out either.

I have WinMX and I have trouble with the layout. For some reason it doesn't seem accessible to me. :-/

I know what you mean Bobby! I went from the nice simplistic interface of Napster to Bearshare and what a mistake that was!!! Talk about being overwhelmed with options!! The nice thing about WinMX and Bearshare is that they are NOT limited by bit length and you can search for pictures, movies etc! I still like WinMX better than Bearshare.

From what the RIAA has said it looks like it wants to scare the people with large shared MP3 folders to eliminate them therefore shutting down the amount of MP3s available to the public, and go after the individuals who still have large MP3 folders. Very smart move! Good thing I know of an FTP friend who has all of his on his FTP site!
