Subject: Rackin' Frackin' computer!!! Please Help!

Written By: XenaKat13 on 08/18/02 at 09:59 p.m.

Any computer techs out there who may be able to help me?  I've been away from the 'boards for most of this past week because I cannot seem to stay connected to the internet.

I am on a 56K dialup.  I have had my brother come in and look over my system. He can't find anything wrong with either my hardware or my software.  His diagnosis is "dirty phone lines". :P Unfortunately, that's not something that I can do much about. My phone company tried to get me to sign up for their DSL service last time I complained, and the word on the street is they are charging mucho $$$$ for what amounts to S***.

So here's what's happening.  I can dial in, (using MSN 6.0) and I'm fine for about twenty minutes or so.  Then suddenly, my modem hangs up.  I can re-dial in, and I'm good to go for another five or ten minutes, until I go to a page that loads slowly, or has a lot of graphics.  Then it hangs up on me again.  At the end of an hour, it doesn't hang up on me, but no matter what I do I get the "cannot find server" error message, even when I hit the "back" button.  Closing all my apps and re-starting doesn't help, I have to do a full shut-down, then a cold start. (I've been giving it at least 10 minutes before starting up, usually it's more like hours.)  Any ideas?  Was my brother right?

I got an Idea, don't know if it will help, Uninstall msn, uninstall your modem drivers, Disconect your line to your modem, open up your computer take out your modem, boot up your computer, shut down your computer, reinstall modem, reinstall MSN, log on see if it fixes it.

Or you could unistall MSN 6.0 and get MSN 5.4 (They made that when MSN was still worth a $hit). you could also check for Viruses, or see if you can update your modem drivers from the manufactures website.  Just some Ideas

Could it be your ISP that has the problem? I have seen that more often than I have found a problem at my end.

are you using Windows 95 and not one of it's newer versions? Windows 95 had problems with it's TCP/IP stack, which used to get corrupted after a month or so of normal use.. I know with my cable modem on my old 95 box, I used to have to uninstall my network card and reinstall it, and that would solve the issue you're having (since it would re-install the network stuff in the process).. you might be able to do something similar, uninstall and re-install your modem.. dial-up networking..

or if you're computer is new enough, you could run a newer version of a Windows OS, like Windows 98... of course if you're already running a newer OS, it's probably not the source of the problem...

Mine did that, too, before I switched to DSL.  The problem may be with your local server, i.e. the phone # you're using to dial-in.  Locate all the access numbers in your area and try each one 'till you find one that works.
   Hope this helps.

I think Screwball is probably right. This is pretty much what I went through all week. What we finally figured out was that the modem software was not loading the drivers. I also had to install the second edition of Windows '98 to support the modem.

Hi, everyone, I'm back for a few short, hit-and-run kind of visits.  I've tried this idea, Screwball, when my brother came over two weeks ago.  I'm up to thirty minutes online, if I'm not running anything else.

I am running Windows 98, and my virus scan is up-to-date, with nothing detected.

I made a list of all my local access numbers and tried them all.  All with the same results.  :P

I'm planning to call the phone company and if I have to, I will fib and say my phone conversations are running with static, too.  My brother took the list of phone numbers and tried all of them at his house across town over the last two weeks, with no troubles, so it seems the final diagnosis is trouble with my personal phone lines ( I think?)

I've cancelled a lot of newsletters, so I won't be spending so much time catching up on my e-mail, and can be here more (Priorities!!!).

As for the job search, I realized I could not commit to a definite schedule until school starts (Sept 4th, here) because I don't know what time the school bus is coming for the munchkin.  I tried calling the school department directly with nothing better than: "It could be coming anywhere between 7am and 9am."  Well, DUH!!  I knew that, I wanted something a bit more specific.  I would have gotten better results talking to a brick wall.

Oh well.
