Written By: RockandRollFan on 09/27/02 at 07:18 p.m.

With just a little bit to go....My world will turn upside down...emmitt smith will become the leagues all-time rushing leader....had Barry Sanders kept playing he would be SO far ahead of mr. smith.  Who Is The Greatest Running Back Of All Time...In YOUR opinion.....consider Durability, speed, all around talent.....Enjoy!

Of course Jim Brown, whose record Walter Payton broke, only played nine seasons, some of which were only 12 games long, and if he had played another nine, he'd be untouchable!  It's a shame his career ended so he could be an actor (e. g. "The Dirty Dozen").

I'm sorry to disagree with your Jim Brown choice, but my belief is that a truly great athlete is humble and does something to help the football community. Brown did absolutely nothing, other than bad acting choices, wife beating, and race baiting. (Although he was dead-on about Emmitt Smith.) Walter Payton not only was a great athlete, but also a great humanitarian.

I'd say Walter Payton.  As for Stats...I'd use the same comparison as I did with Elway going to the 49'rs and Montana going to the Broncos....Elway still wins the rings while Montana is early to retire....making John the Best ever QB, IMO :) Had Walter Payton been on a better team with a better offensive line in his early days, there is NO way mr. smith would be near to catching him.  As for my neighbor who argues that smith is better than Barry Sanders...same formula as with the QB's...Sanders with the cowpies...he runs for more yards...smith to detroit and he's out of the league quickly ;)
