Subject: Fish

Written By: dagwood on 09/28/02 at 01:15 p.m.

So, my daughters pet frog died yesterday and she is heartbroken.  (I am kinda sad, too, but it is alot harder on a four year old than a 31 year old.)  I was thinking about getting her a Beta fish because I heard they are pretty hearty and low maintenance.  Any opinions?  Especially if you have had one and can tell me if this is true.

Thanks

Boring!! They are hardy and very low maintenance but they barely even swim around. We've been doing plain old Goldfish. Although we're not having as much luck as I did when I was a kid. At .15 cents a pop, or a quarter if you go for a big one, it's a safe bet. We just buy the feeder goldfish at the petstore or Walmart. The kids like putting the pretty rocks back in when I clean the bowl.

I used to keep Bettas all the time. They are very low maintenance -- just a bowl with some rocks and a plant or two. No "bubbler" required as they are surface breathers. Just keep them warm and make sure you feed them frozen brine shrimp as well as the flaky food. They are very beautiful fish. :)

My opinion is that you should get VHS fish, as it's hard finding anyone who knows how to fix Beta fish anymore.....

::) :)

I'll keep that in mind.  Thanks for the advice, FussBudget. ::) ;D

Do goldfish need bubblers?  Cheap is good, and goldfish are fun, too.

I keep fish myself and really enjoy the hobby although bettas to me are quite hard to keep alive. (At least in my experience)  I believe it has something to do with the quality that you get at the  pet store (I do not have the option of getting them directly from a breeder) and the type of environment they are kept in.  Yes, bettas can be kept in a bowl...at the minimum 2 gallons, but a 10 gallon cycled, filtered tank would be best.  If kept in a small container the water changes will have to be every other day, that to me is not low maintenence and many are not willing to commit to such a task.  They are air breathers and do not require an air pump but the water does need to be filtered and the temperature maintained.  In all honesty, all fish are fairly high maintenence.  But if you are committed it would be a great experience for you and your daughter.  Careful it can sometimes get addicting.   ;)

Here is a great site to help you out on keeping bettas.

I hardly ever put LOL on my correspondence because not much makes me actually LOL but ^ made me LOL. Oh, and Dag, sorry about your little girls frog. :'( I had an Oscar at one time that was a pretty cool pet, if you can call a fish a pet.

Please, goldfish should not be kept in a bowl or without aeration.  They grow to about 7 inches or more (depending on the species), feeder (comet) goldfish being one of the largest species.  They are very messy fish (waste) and with the combination of their potential size, they need at least 10 gallons to start with---20 being better for only one fish.

They are long lived fish so if someone tells you they have kept them for a year or two...it is not a long time.  Goldfish have a lifespan of 20 plus years.

Thanks for all the input, guys.  I will have to think on this.  I want to get her a fish of some kind because I am allergic to all things furry.  It sucks because I love cats.

I have heard it said that if you bathe a cat every two weeks their body does not produce the allergins that cause people to have a reaction....
