Subject: HELP!!! computer geeks or knowledgeable novices

Written By: Shannon on 10/11/02 at 07:54 p.m.

Please, is there someone here that might know how to recover data from damaged/unplayable CD's.  A couple of my CD's, a photo CD and a program CD, are not being recognized by the CD rom drive.  The CD's are still in good condition since I rarely ever use them so I am baffled on how they had become damaged.   ???

It is the photo CD that I really need to recover since it contains photos that I had taken from my digital camera.  I don't have back ups.  :'(

Only guesses, Island Girl, but here goes...

- Have you tried to read the cd's on another computer?
- Were you ever able to read them on the current computer?
- Have you tried turning the computer off and turning it on again?
- Is the digital camera program on the computer you're trying to read the cd on?

Good luck.

depends on old or new your computer is.  the older ones will not read the CD-R's.  the computer at leat to have windows 95 or higher.  for example, a computer with windows 3.11 with a CD-rom will not read the CD.

Have you tried to read the cd's on another computer?  No, I probably should try this

Were you ever able to read them on the current computer?  Yes, when I first burned the CD.  The CD is a year old.

Have you tried turning the computer off and turning it on again?  Yes

Is the digital camera program on the computer you're trying to read the cd on?  Yes

I am running windows 98 SE

After a good polishing I was able to open up the CD to at least display the files but for some reason I get an error message everytime I try to open up a file or to copy the file to my hard drive.  Tried to burn the disc also but the CD burner can't read the files.   ???

This is what I would try to do on windows 95:

I would put the cd in the cd drive (I'm assuming it's drive D).  Then I would Open Windows Explorer.  In there, I would click on D drive and see if you can see that the files are being read.  If it shows there are files in there, I would copy them into My Documents on the C drive.  I would guess that you would be able to open them from My Documents.

That was what I had first attempted....but I still get an error message that the file couldn't be read.  Could it be a file association problem?  Being able to see the files but not being able to access them is really getting me upset.   :'(

I really appreciate your help.  And if you have more suggestions.... :)

I'm stumped, Island Girl.  This has happened to me before, and somehow it got fixed... I can't for the life of me remember how.

If they did copy onto the C drive, I'd try renaming them?  And I'd check Properties for the disk in the D drive.  If it shows that it's full, I wouldn't worry that the files are gone.  They're just inaccessible.

Here are a couple sites I googled that might help:

You might want to try this one too, Island Girl.
